When researching memory foam mattresses, chances are you have come across both the Tempur-Pedic and Amerisleep brands.

Tempur-Pedic is well-known for introducing memory foam mattresses in the early 1990s, and is responsible for the popularity of this type of mattress. Since its first memory foam mattress was introduced, Tempur-Pedic has merged with Sealy and expanded its offerings to include a wide range of mattresses, foundations, and sleep accessories. Memory foam remains the key component in each of Tempur-Pedic’s products. As the vast selection of Tempur-Pedic mattresses can feel overwhelming, we are focusing on the TEMPUR-Adapt for the purposes of this review. This mattress features the original TEMPUR formulation. It is offered in two styles: Medium and Medium Hybrid.

Amerisleep was founded in 2007. Though it is a younger company than Tempur-Pedic, it has built a reputation around positive customer service and high-quality mattresses. Amerisleep offers five mattress options: AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5. All five are memory foam mattresses with a high-density foam base and a memory foam comfort layer. The different styles refer to the level of firmness of the mattress. The AS3 is Amerisleep’s best-selling mattress.

This review will compare Tempur-Pedic’s Medium TEMPUR-Adapt mattress to the Amerisleep AS3 mattress. Both of these are memory foam mattresses that provide contouring and support. Read on for our in-depth comparison.

Mattress Construction Comparison

Amerisleep uses CertiPUR-US Certified plant-based foam in all of their mattresses. The company focuses on sustainability and environmentally-friendly practices. The AS3 mattress is 12 inches tall and comprised of three layers of foam with a fabric cover.

The top comfort layer is Bio-Pur memory foam, which features an open-cell structure that improves temperature regulation for a cooler sleep. Since it is memory foam, it contours to the shape of your body and relieves pressure points. This layer is 3 inches thick with a density of 4.0 pounds and an ILD of 10.

The second layer is the Affinity transition layer. This foam layer features Amerisleep’s HIVE (Harnessing Intelligent Ventilation and Energy) technology with hexagon-shaped foam cores grouped together for added support. This layer is 2 inches thick with a density of 1.65 pounds and an ILD of 30.

The third layer is the Bio-Core foam support layer that increases the durability of the mattress and prevents sagging over time. This layer is 7 inches thick with a density of 1.8 pounds and an ILD of 35.

The Amerisleep mattress has a breathable fabric cover infused with Celliant technology, which converts body heat into infrared technology and increases blood flow and circulation.

Amerisleep layers - construction

Tempur-Pedic does not provide detailed information about the construction of their mattresses, as it is considered to be proprietary information. The foam is designed to offer support and cushioning with responsive foam cells.

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress is an all-foam mattress with three distinct foam layers and a knit cover. Specific details regarding the density of each foam layer are not disclosed.

The comfort layer is TEMPUR-ES foam, which contours to the shape of your body and provides comfortable support. The second layer is a support layer of the original TEMPUR foam, which is adaptable and conforming. It is designed to evenly distribute your body weight. A polyfoam base supports the comfort layers.

The knit cover features cool-to-touch technology for temperature neutrality, but further details are not provided regarding its fabrication.

Firmness Comparison

Understanding mattress firmness is essential to choosing the right mattress for you. Firmness is subjective, as it indicates how comfortable a mattress is. Comfort depends on multiple factors including personal preference, sleeping position, body weight, and temperature preference. To simplify matters, mattress firmness is typically assigned a number on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 is extremely soft and 10 is extremely firm, though it is rare to find a mattress at either extreme. Most mattresses fall somewhere in the middle. Mattresses with a soft, plush feel conform to your body and provide a feeling of sinking in. Medium to Medium-Firm mattresses are the most adaptable for a variety of sleepers and thus the most common. Firmer mattresses are still supportive but have less cushioning. Both Amerisleep and Tempur-Pedic offer mattresses in a wide range of firmness options.

For Amerisleep, the AS1 is their firmest model, while the AS5 is the softest. The AS3 has a Medium firmness of 5.5 that is preferable for side and combination sleepers. It relieves pressure points while contouring to the shape of your body.

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress has a Medium firmness rated as a 5 on the firmness scale. The combination of memory foam layers provides a responsive and supportive feel that contours to your body while providing support and spinal alignment.

Sleep Experience

As the Amerisleep AS3 mattress and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress are both memory foam styles, it is important to take a closer look at their unique capabilities. Read on for more on how these mattresses perform when it comes to additional factors such as temperature control, motion isolation, responsiveness, and support.

Temperature Control

Temperature in a mattress is affected by the design, materials, and firmness of the mattress. In order to regulate temperature, a mattress should be breathable with good air circulation. Memory foam mattresses have a tendency to sleep hot. Due to their contouring nature and plush feel, air cannot circulate as effectively around the body and the foam retains body heat.

The Amerisleep’s plant-based foam is five times more breathable than generic memory foam due to its open cell structure that promotes airflow. The cover is knit with Celliant technology and thermoreactive minerals, which convert body heat into infrared energy. This provides a cooler sleep that also has been shown to aid in muscle recovery.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses have a tendency to sleep hot. Though they have expanded their collection to offer more breathable mattresses with technology to increase air circulation and regulate temperature, the original TEMPUR foam is especially responsive to body heat. It absorbs the heat to soften and provide a feeling of sinking in. Their soft, plush mattresses sink in more, which reduces airflow around the body and gives the feeling of sleeping hot. The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress has a breathable knit cover with cool-to-touch technology, which helps provide a cooler sleep.

Motion Transfer

In general, memory foam mattresses have superior motion isolation. They respond to the area where pressure is applied and absorb the movement so it does not transfer to other parts of the bed.

While motion isolation may be better in the softer, more plush Amerisleep models AS4 and AS5, the Amerisleep AS3 mattress still provides higher than average motion isolation.

Tempur-Pedic is renowned for its motion isolation technology. The TEMPUR foam is responsive to pressure, contouring closely to the shape of your body. Motion is absorbed and isolated as the foam responds to movement and is slow to return to its original shape.

Proper support and spinal alignment from a mattress depend on the responsiveness of the mattress. For the spine to be aligned, the mattress needs to respond to pressure points and provide contouring support. Memory foam is a responsive material, as it tends to contour to the shape of your body and keep your spine in alignment.

The Amerisleep AS3 includes a responsive transition layer that relieves pressure points while evenly supporting your body weight. The medium firmness provides support and cushioning that keeps your spine aligned without the feeling of sinking in.

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt responds to both heat and pressure, softening to contour to the shape of your body. The medium firmness of this mattress also provides support and comfort for proper spinal alignment and pressure point relief.

Resilience and Bounce

The resilience and bounce of a mattress measures how quickly the mattress returns to its original shape when you move or leave the bed. Memory foam absorbs movement and contours to your body, so it typically has less bounce than latex and innerspring mattresses.

Amerisleep foam is designed to return to its original shape within seconds, which is quite fast when compared to traditional memory foam. This provides a little extra bounce, though the memory foam still absorbs movement.

Though Tempur-Pedic foam is designed to return to its original shape, it does so more slowly. Because of this, there is more of a feeling of sinking into the mattress and less resilience. Since the mattress responds to body heat and pressure for superior motion isolation, it takes more time for the mattress to bounce back. This can make movement feel restricted.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how supportive the perimeter of the bed is, and is an important consideration when sitting on the edge of the bed. While innerspring mattresses tend to have a reinforced perimeter, this is not common in memory foam mattresses. The Amerisleep AS3 has average edge support, considering it is an all-foam mattress. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt has below average edge support, as the contouring memory foam lacks resilience.

Off-gassing and Smell

Off-gassing is common in new memory foam mattresses, including the Amerisleep AS3 mattress and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress. The smell is the result of chemicals dissipating and is not considered to be harmful. The new smell of the Amerisleep mattress should dissipate within a few hours, or at most a couple of days. This is also the case for Tempur-Pedic mattresses. If the smell is strong, Tempur-Pedic recommends airing out your mattress for the first couple of days by leaving the sheets off during the day.

When selecting a mattress, it is important to consider how the mattress will be delivered. Shopping online presents its own challenges, and sleep trial length and return policies can differ between companies. Keep reading for how Amerisleep and Tempur-Pedic handle delivery, returns, and warranty.

Though the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt and the Amerisleep AS3 mattress are both memory foam mattresses, they differ noticeably in price. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are considered luxury mattresses that are among the most expensive on the market. This makes the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress more of an investment. Amerisleep Mattress vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattress – Which One Should You Buy?

When you have your mattress choice narrowed down to the Amerisleep vs. Tempur-Pedic, how do you decide? Determining which one is right for you can be difficult, even when considering all the factors above. We’ve created a simple list of factors below that may help with your final decision.

Buy the Amerisleep mattress if you:

  • Prefer an eco-friendly option: Amerisleep mattresses are created with a plant-based foam, meaning they use less petroleum in the manufacturing process. The foam is also produced in a closed environment through a process known as Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF). This zero-emission manufacturing process keeps the air emitted from the foam in a chamber before it is filtered through carbon filters, leaving the air cleaner than it was before. Unlike all other foam manufacturing processes, VPF exceeds the expectations of the Clean Air Act.
  • Tend to sleep hot: Because of the open cell structure of Amerisleep’s plant-based foam, more air circulates through the AS3 mattress than in traditional memory foam mattresses. The Celliant technology in the fabric cover also absorbs body heat and converts it to infrared energy for a cooler sleep. The combination of the two make the Amerisleep AS3 mattress more breathable and cooler than the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress.
  • Want a longer warranty: The 20-year warranty of the Amerisleep mattress is twice that of Tempur-Pedic. It should be noted that the first 10 years of the warranty, Amerisleep offers a full replacement in the case of workmanship or manufacturing defects; the second half of the warranty is prorated.
  • Like to know what your mattress is made of: Amerisleep discloses the composition of each layer of their mattresses, including the ILD and density of the foam, and the details of their manufacturing process. Tempur-Pedic considers this information proprietary and does not disclose it.

  • Want your old mattress removed: Tempur-Pedic offers free White Glove Delivery, which includes the removal of your old mattress. This is not a service that Amerisleep provides.
  • Value motion isolation and contouring: The TEMPUR foam is renowned for its contouring abilities and superior motion isolation. While the Amerisleep mattress offers motion isolation and contouring, the Tempur-Pedic mattress gives even more of a feeling of sinking in.
