Bear’s signature bed is a memory foam mattress, which first hit the market in 2015. Bear stands out for its mattress cover, which uses Celliant™ textile technology, which is billed as a way to reduce inflammation and aid muscle recovery. The mattress is available in one firmness option in all standard sizes, with 10 inches in height.

The Bear Mattress is made up of four layers: 6.5 inches of high-density polyfoam, 2.5 inches of response polyfoam, and 1 inch of graphite-gel memory foam. Bear’s distinctive cover is a woven blend of Celliant™ and polyester.

The Bear Mattress is available in one firmness option, which falls around a 6.5 on the firmness scale. (This scale is from 1-10, with 10 being the most firm and 1 being the least firm). This is considered a medium-firm mattress, which is generally a good starting point for all sleeping positions. But if you know you prefer a softer, more plush feel, the Bear might not be right for you.

The Bear Mattress is available directly from Bear’s website as well as Amazon. Bear operates a showroom in Hoboken, NJ, where mattresses are displayed and available to try.

The Bear is a memory foam mattress, constructed in three primary layers. The support core is 6 inches of 1.8 PCF support foam. The transition layers are comprised of two pieces of 3 PCF  response polyfoam totally 2.5 inches. The top layer is 1 inch of 4 PCF graphic-gel memory foam. The mattress cover is what really sets the Bear mattress apart. As mentioned earlier, the cover is a woven blend of polyester and Celliant™. This infrared yarn technology is said to recycle the body’s energy as infrared light, thereby enhancing blood flow and oxygenation of muscle tissue. This technology has been reviewed and approved by the FDA as a medical device. Bear’s foams are all Certi-PUR certified.

Bear Mattresses are made to order then shipped from factories in either Georgia, Wisconsin, or California. The Bear arrives compressed, wrapped in plastic, in a labeled 40x20x20 box. There is no assembly required.

The Bear mattress is delivered to your door via FedEx ground, typically within 4-7 business days after the order was placed. Shipping is free within the continental United States. Additional charges apply for deliveries to Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.

When the Bear Mattress arrives, it is best to unpack and unroll it right away, so that the mattress can begin to decompress. (Bear says the mattress should be left in its box no longer than 90 days.) Once unpacked, the mattress should be ready to sleep on within a few hours.

Sleep Trial

When purchased directly from Bear, the mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial. Bear does require that you keep the mattress for 30 nights before initiating a return. If at any time between 30-100 nights you are unsatisfied with the mattress for any reason, you can return it for a full refund of the purchase price. Bear will make arrangements to pick up and remove the mattress at no cost.

If purchased through Amazon, the sleep trial may vary. All returns must be initiated through Amazon.

Bear offers a 10-year warranty covering defects in manufacturing and materials. Customers may be on the hook for shipping and transportation costs related to repairs, but Bear will cover all replacement and/or repair costs. For full warranty details, please click here.

Old Mattress Removal

Bear does not coordinate the removal of old mattresses, but the company has partnered with 1-800-GOT-JUNK to offer their customers a discount on removal services.

Bear Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Foam mattresses are known for their motion isolation properties. With its three layers of quality foam, the Bear Mattress does indeed offer very good motion isolation. The foam “traps” motion, keeping it from traveling across the bed and disturbing another sleeper.

Edge Support

Poor edge support is a common complaint about foam mattresses. The Bear Mattress, as is typical for foam mattresses, does not have reinforced stability around the perimeter. That tends to result in sagging over time.

Heat Retention

The Bear Mattress is constructed to avoid the problem of heat retention, which foam mattresses often struggle with. The gel-memory foam comfort layer is designed to help cool, as is the Bear’s mattress cover. But like most foam mattresses, there is some heat retention with the Bear mattress.

Off-gassing is the temporary smell that a mattress releases when it is first removed from its packaging. The Bear Mattress will likely emit some smell initially, but customers have not complained of an excessive odor and say that any smell dissipates quite quickly.

Support is the mattress feature that keeps your body aligned while you sleep. The Bear Mattress uses a combination of foams that work together to relieve pressure points and support sleepers in all positions.

Because the Bear Mattresses is made up of a combination of different foam types, it doesn’t offer the close contouring “hug” of a traditional memory foam mattress. That being said, it does still conform to an individual sleeper and provide pressure point relief.

Foam mattresses tend to hold up well over time. Initial feedback of the Bear Mattress indicates it will also perform well over several years. But since this model has only been available since 2015, there is no conclusive evidence of its long-term durability.

As a medium-firm bed, sleepers will not sink in as far into the Bear Mattress, making movement easier. Because the Bear Mattress doesn’t have the “hug” of memory foam, it also does not impede movement like other memory foam mattresses. Therefore, it should not inhibit sexual activity.

What Type of Sleeper is Well Suited to a Bear Mattress?

With every mattress review, we remind you that the right mattress for you is heavily dependent on your own preferences: your typical sleep position, body weight and type, and any health conditions you may have. Individual factors like comfort and proper spinal support are important to consider. Always take advantage of a mattress’ sleep trial to make sure whatever bed you choose is right for you.

Keeping that in mind, consider this subjective customer feedback:

Side Sleepers: Lightweight sleepers (those weighing less than 130 lb) rated the Bear Mattress as “fair.” The mattress might be slightly too firm for the lightest side sleepers. Average weight sleepers (those weighing between 130-230 lb) and heavyweight sleepers (those weighing more than 230 lb) rated the Bear as “very good” and “good.”

Back Sleepers: Back sleepers across the board rated the Bear well, with average-weight back sleepers saying the bed was “very good.”

Stomach Sleepers: The Bear Mattress didn’t fair quite as well with stomach sleepers. Lightweight stomach sleepers said the Bear was “poor” and heavyweight stomach sleepers said it was “fair.” Average weight sleepers gave it “good” marks. Overall, it might feel slightly too firm for those who generally sleep on their stomachs.

Our Verdict

The Bear Mattress is a quality mixed-foam mattress at a below-average cost. What sets the Bear Mattress apart from competitors is its unique cover, which features Celliant™ textile technology – said to reduce inflammation and aid in muscle recovery.

The Bear offers pressure point relief and contouring support, without the close “hug” of more traditional memory foam mattresses. Those looking for a closer contour or a softer, more plush mattress might look elsewhere.
