Mattress Construction Comparison

Bear

The Bear mattress is a 10-inch mattress that is constructed of three foam layers. Each layer serves a specific purpose, and the layers combine to offer cooling, contouring, pressure relief, support, and durability.

The Bear mattress’s comfort layer is 1 inch of 4 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) graphite-gel memory foam. Memory foam is known for its contouring, while the graphite-gel composition is intended to disperse excess body heat.

The transition layer of the mattress uses two pieces of 3 PCF responsive polyfoam to offer pressure relief and support. This layer totals 2.5 inches. The base layer of the Bear mattress uses 6.5 inches of 1.8 PCF support foam to provide durability.

The Bear mattress’s cover is composed of Celliant fabric. This high-tech material is designed to recycle the body’s natural energy. It is purported to improve athletic performance, promote higher quality sleep, and improve overall wellness.

Purple

The Purple mattress is 9.5 inches tall. It is constructed of three foam layers designed to promote airflow, provide contouring, offer pressure relief, isolate motion, and provide structural support.

The top layer of the mattress is Purple’s proprietary Purple Grid. This 2-inch thick layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer uses a unique grid formation. It is designed to be responsive, softening under your shoulders and hips while supporting your body for proper spinal alignment. The grid design also allows for airflow and isolates motion.

The next layer is composed of 3.5 inches of polyfoam with a density of 1.8 PCF. This layer is designed to provide additional responsiveness. The final layer uses 4 inches of support polyfoam with a density of 2 PCF to provide the structural support the mattress needs.

The mattress cover uses a stretchy, knit fabric composed of viscose, polyester, and lycra. The cover is designed to bend with the Purple Grid while allowing airflow.

Firmness Comparison

Firmness may be the main criteria that determine whether or not a mattress will be comfortable for you and how well it will promote spinal alignment. Firmness refers to the overall softness or hardness of the mattress.

A 10-point scale is commonly used to rate firmness. A 1 refers to the softest, plushest possible mattress. Think of it as sleeping on a cloud. A 10 refers to the firmest mattress imaginable.

There is no “correct” firmness for a mattress. Instead, firmness is a matter of personal preference. Most people find a firmness between 5-6 acceptable. However, sleepers over 230 pounds may benefit from a firmer option, while sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer a softer option.

The Bear mattress ranks around 7 on the firmness scale. This means it may be considered a medium-firm or firm mattress. While this level of firmness may be slightly greater than many sleepers prefer, stomach sleepers and sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may benefit from this firmness since it will prevent them from sinking in too deeply. However, the firmness could be problematic for sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds, who may not sink in enough to promote alignment.

The Purple mattress is a medium-firm mattress. It ranks around a 6 on the firmness scale. This falls comfortably into the most popular firmness range, so the Purple mattress may appeal to a wider variety of sleepers.

Sleep Experience

Both the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress offer innovative designs that aim to improve the overall sleep experience. However, the two mattresses vary on temperature control, motion transfer, responsiveness, resilience and bounce, edge support, and off-gassing. While they may be similar in some areas, assessing the differences may help you determine which option is best for you.

Temperature Control

Heat retention can be a problem with some all-foam mattresses. However, both the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress offer adaptations that help them sleep cooler.

The Bear mattress uses a Celliant cover, which is more breathable than most fabrics. The layer of graphite-gel memory foam is designed to pull unwanted heat away from your body. Since the Bear mattress is firmer than many mattresses, it also prevents excessive sinking, so it shouldn’t hug the body enough to trap a lot of heat.  The Purple mattress’s grid comfort system allows airflow to promote a cooler night’s sleep.

While both mattresses use different methods, either mattress should offer enough heat dispersal to keep you comfortable throughout the night.

Motion Transfer

When your partner moves and you feel that movement across the surface of the bed, you’re experiencing motion transfer.

Both the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress are composed entirely of foam. Foam mattresses traditionally do an exceptional job isolating motion, and the Bear and the Purple mattresses are no exceptions. Since the foam can absorb motion, you might not even notice if your partner is tossing and turning during the night.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how a mattress contours to the shape of your body to provide pressure relief and promote alignment. A responsive mattress should allow your heavier areas (your hips and shoulders) to sink in, thereby promoting proper spinal alignment.

The Bear mattress’s 1-inch thick comfort layer of graphite-gel memory foam paired with the 2.5-inch polyfoam transition layer can offer pressure relief and support.

The Purple mattress provides contouring through the 2-inch Purple Grid and a 3.5-inch layer of responsive polyfoam.

While both mattresses may provide enough responsiveness to promote comfort and alignment, the Purple may have a slight edge. In total, 5.5 inches of the Purple mattress are designed to provide contouring, while 3.5 inches of the Bear mattress focus on contouring. The Purple’s thicker layers that aim to provide contouring may allow for greater responsiveness and pressure point relief.

Resilience and Bounce

Resilience refers to how quickly a mattress regains its shape after pressure is removed. When a mattress regains its shape quickly, that trait is referred to as “bounce.” Mattresses with resilience and bounce may make it easier to change sleep positions during the night and engage in sexual activity.

Since all-foam mattresses are designed to mold to the body and absorb motion, they do not traditionally offer as much resilience and bounce as hybrid or innerspring mattresses. As is common with foam mattresses, neither the Bear mattress nor the Purple mattress provides a lot of resilience of bounce. However, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer used in the Purple Grid should rebound more quickly than memory foam, so the Purple mattress is slightly more resilient than the Bear mattress.

Edge Support

Reinforced edges can help create better edge support, allowing you to sit or sleep close to the edge of the bed without the mattress compressing too much and feeling unstable.

Foam mattresses do not traditionally offer reinforced edges, so they do not provide as much edge support as innerspring or hybrid mattresses. Like other foam mattresses, the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress lack reinforced edges, which may make it harder to sit on or sleep near the edge.

Off-gassing and Smell

When first unboxed, foam mattresses often emit a slight odor. While off-gassing is not harmful, some may find it offensive at first. As with other foam mattresses, both the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress may initially let off an odor. However, this odor should dissipate within a few hours to a few days if the mattress is left in a well-ventilated room.

Shipping, Trial, Warranty, and Returns

While the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress are nearly identical in their shipping policies, return policies, trial length, and warranty length, it is important to be aware of these factors when selecting your mattress.

Prices, Sizes, and Value

As with any big purchase, the price may be a determining factor in selecting which mattress is right for you. Here is how the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress compare on price.

Bear
Purple
Mattress Size Price
Twin $540
Twin XL $640
Full $740
Queen $840

California King $940
Mattress Size Price
Twin $649
Twin XL $699
Full $949
Queen $1,099
King $1,399
California King $1,399

The Purple mattress is more expensive than the Bear mattress across all mattress sizes. While the price differences between the twin and twin XL sizes may be relatively insignificant, the price differences grow as the mattress sizes increase. The king and California king sizes of the Purple mattress cost over $500 more than the Bear mattress, which is a significant price difference.

Bear frequently offers discount codes and promotions, which can make the price difference between the Bear mattress and the Purple mattress even greater. Purple frequently offers a free additional product with your mattress purchase, so you might be able to get a free pillow or sheet set. However, Purple doesn’t offer discounts on mattresses themselves very often.

Either mattress could constitute a good value depending on what you’re looking for. However, the Bear mattress is significantly cheaper.
