The GhostBed and the Purple mattresses both have elements that set them apart from many of the other foam mattresses that are sold online. In the case of the GhostBed, it’s a mixture of latex and memory foam in the comfort layer. For the Purple, it’s the use of a proprietary and patented material that has a performance that’s different from most other mattress foams.
In certain ways, such as the firmness level, the sleep experience on these mattresses is similar. However, in other ways, there are important differences that can affect which is most likely to be the better option for you. In this comparison, we’ll explain these differences as well as the other critical information that can help you in this decision.
As we review these details, keep in mind that even though these companies manufacture other mattress models (the GhostBed Luxe and the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses), we’re focusing exclusively on a comparison of the GhostBed Classic and the Purple mattress.
Mattress Construction Comparison
The GhostBed and Purple are both all-foam mattresses, but there are important differences between them in terms of their foams and layering.
The GhostBed Classic has a height of 11” and has a knit cover with a soft, stretchy material. The interior structure has 3 layers.
The top layer is made of 1.5” of synthetic aerated latex that has a density of 3.5 PCF. This latex can contour to the body but also gives the mattress considerable bounce. Because it is aerated, it retains very little heat.
The second layer is 2” of memory foam that is gel-infused and has a density of 4 PCF. Memory foam has enhanced contouring relative ot latex, so this layer works to improve the pressure point relief offered by the mattress.
The bottom layer of the mattress is polyfoam with a density of 2 PCF.
The Purple mattress is 9.5” tall and has 3 layers with a knit fabric cover.
The topmost layer is 2” thick and made of a patented material called a Hyper-Elastic Polymer. Purple refers to this layer as the Purple Grid because it is composed of many small squares that compress as weight is applied to them. When the weight is removed, the squares quickly spring back to their full size and shape. As a result, the Purple Grid comfort layer is both responsive and resilient.
Underneath the Purple Grid is 3.5” of polyfoam with a density of 1.8 PCF, and beneath that is a base layer of 4” of polyfoam with a density of 2 PCF.
A fundamental requirement for a new mattress should be that it is comfortable for you. This seems obvious, but sometimes the importance of comfort can get lost in the shuffle with so many other factors to consider. At the end of the day, though, you need a mattress that feels right and on which you can let your mind and body relax.
Firmness is the most central component of comfort and relates to how hard or soft the mattress is. We use a scale of 1-10 to rate the firmness of any mattress. The lower the number, the softer the mattress, so a 1 is as soft as a mattress can be. The most popular firmness level is medium firm, which is 5-7 on this scale. That said, firmness preferences can be all over the map, and some people prefer a much firmer or much softer mattress.
On this scale, the Purple is a 6 while the GhostBed is considered to be between a 6 and 7. As a result, they generally have a similar level of firmness with the GhostBed having a tendency to be perceived as just a tiny bit more firm.
Many factors influence your overall sleep experience, and in this section, we evaluate the similarities and differences between the GhostBed and Purple mattresses as it relates to those factors.
If there isn’t enough airflow around the body and/or if a mattress has a tendency to retain heat, then it’s easy to overheat during the night. This is also referred to as “sleeping hot.” For some people, sleeping hot can be a major impediment to getting a good night’s sleep.
Temperature control is a strength of the Purple mattress, which is known for sleeping cool. The design of the Purple Grid mitigates against heat retention, and the rapid reaction of the material also works against excessive hugging of the body that can block airflow. The GhostBed also has elements that help prevent sleeping hot — such as aerated latex in the comfort layer — but the Purple mattress is more effective at preventing overheating.
If movement on one part of the mattress can be felt on other parts of the bed, then that mattress has a lot of motion transfer. If the motion isn’t felt, then the mattress has strong properties of motion isolation. Motion isolation is important to help prevent disruption during the night that can come about from a partner changing positions or getting in and out of bed.
Motion isolation is good for both the Purple and the GhostBed, although the GhostBed has a minor edge here. Bounce in the mattress — which is provided by the latex in the GhostBed and the Purple Grid in the Purple — tends to cause more motion to be transferred. However, the amount of contouring and responsiveness can counteract this motion transfer. And this is especially the case in the GhostBed since it has a layer of memory foam, which is excellent at limiting motion transfer.
One of the most important roles for your mattress is promoting spinal alignment and health. If a mattress isn’t supportive, it’s easy for back pain to become a problem in either the short or long term. In order to support spinal alignment, it’s necessary for a mattress to be responsive, or, in other words, for it to cushion each part of the body according to the amount of weight and pressure that it applies to the bed.
The Purple and GhostBed mattresses are both quite responsive. The Purple Grid is very sensitive to different amounts of pressure applied to it, and the GhostBed has both latex and memory foam to contour to and cushion the body.
The biggest difference when it comes to responsiveness has to do with the thickness of the comfort layer. In the Purple, the comfort system is only 2” thick. In the GhostBed, the combination of the latex and memory foam is a total of 3.5”. This extra thickness helps the comfort layer accommodate sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds or sleepers who have very serious pressure points (such as in the shoulders). Some of these people may find that the Purple is not thick enough to still provide adequate cushioning.
Resilience and Bounce
These mattresses both provide a significant amount of bounce thanks to the nature of their materials. The Purple’s grid material quickly rebounds to its shape, and latex, which is in the top layer of the GhostBed, also has a high level of resilience. As a result, moving on the top of the bed is easy, and it is unlikely that you’d ever feel stuck in either of these mattresses.
Both of these mattresses can feel weak if you are sitting or sleeping near the edge of the bed. There are no materials to reinforce the foam at the edge, so when the foam compresses, it can feel unstable. If you need strong edge support, it may be necessary to find a different mattress altogether.
Off-gassing and Smell
A slight odor will emanate from each of these mattresses for a short period after they are removed from their packaging. This smell is not harmful or dangerous, and it will usually fade away within a few hours.

GhostBed Mattress vs. Purple Mattress – Which One Should You Buy?
Buying a new mattress is a considerable investment, so making a final choice about which to buy can feel like a weighty decision. If you have winnowed your choices down to the GhostBed and Purple mattresses, you’ve clearly done your homework and have two excellent options in front of you. Some criteria that may be helpful is selecting one of these two are described below.
Buy the GhostBed mattress if you:
- Want a mattress with memory foam: if you have prior experience with memory foam or know that you want your mattress to have an element of this material, then the GhostBed is clearly the way that you should go since the Purple mattress does not have any memory foam in its composition.
- Have major pressure points or weigh over 230 pounds: because the comfort layer of the GhostBed has an additional 1.5” of thickness, it is better able to accommodate people who weigh more than average or people who have very pronounced pressure points.
Buy the Purple mattress if you:
- Like the idea of sleeping on a new and innovative material: if you’re the type of person who likes to think outside the box and test out new approaches to things like sleep, then the Purple is a great fit. Its Hyper-Elastic Polymer stands out from virtually every other type of mattress material and gives you an opportunity to try out something new.
- Prioritize sleeping cool: if you have issues with sleeping hot or are concerned about overheating in the night, the Purple is a perfect fit since the material doesn’t retain heat and doesn’t inhibit airflow around the body.
Most foam mattresses don’t have the kind of materials offered by the GhostBed and the Purple, and each represents a quality choice that can bring you years of easy sleeping on a mattress that promotes effective rest for your mind and body.
