Firmness

The Hyphen mattress is available in one firmness setting, which falls at a 6-7 on the typical firmness scale. (This scale is from 1-10, with 1 being the least firm and 10 being the most firm.) The Hyphen is considered medium-firm and is a usually good place for most sleepers to start. If you know that you prefer a more “plush” mattress feel, however, the Hyphen might not be a good fit for you.

Availability

The Hyphen is available online, both on the manufacturer’s website and on Amazon. Hyphen does not currently operate any brick and mortar stores or showrooms.

Construction

The Hyphen mattress is constructed in three layers. The base layer is 6 inches of 1.8 PCF (pounds per cubic foot) support foam. The next layer is 2 inches of 2 PCF transition foam. The top layer is 2 inches of proprietary polyfoam called Hyphen foam. This specially constructed foam was designed to provide the contouring properties of memory foam and the responsiveness of latex. The mattress cover is a blend of stretch knit polyester and spandex.

Shipping

Like most “bed in a box” brands, the Hyphen mattress is compressed, sealed, and delivered to your doorstep in a labeled box. The mattress arrives completely assembled and in one piece.

Shipping is free anywhere in the United States – including Alaska and Hawaii. International deliveries are not offered at this time.

Deliveries usually arrive 2-5 business days after an order is place.

Additional Services

Hyphen does not offer any additional delivery services.

Sleep Trial

Hyphen offers a 100-night sleep trial on its mattress. If at any time during those first 100 nights you are unhappy with the bed for any reason, Hyphen will arrive to have it remove and refund your entire purchase price. Note: If you purchase the mattress through Amazon, you will need to initiate the return through Amazon. It is also important to confirm the exact return window before purchasing through a third party.

Warranty

The Hyphen bed is covered by a 20-year warranty. During the first 10 years of the warranty, Hyphen will pay any costs associated with having a mattress repaired or replaced due to defects in materials or manufacturing. In the last 10 years of the warranty, the owner will be responsible for a $99 transportation fee related to repair/replacement. A full description of the company’s warranty terms can be found here.

Hyphen Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The polyfoam used in the Hyphen mattress doesn’t absorb motion quite as well as traditional memory foam, but it does do a fairly good job. The polyfoam tends to trap motion and keep it from disturbing a partner sharing the bed.

Edge Support

Because the perimeter is not reinforced, foam mattresses like the Hyphen tend to have weak edge support. This leads to excess sinkage around the edge of the bed.

Heat Retention

Hyphen’s proprietary foam doesn’t allow for the same sinkage as memory foam. It doesn’t, therefore, tend to trap body heat in the same way.

Off-Gassing

Whenever a foam mattress is compressed and boxed, it tends to carry a temporary odor that is released when it is removed from its packaging. This is referred to as off-gassing. The Hyphen will release this odor, but it will only last a day or two.

Support

We honestly don’t know a lot of about Hyphen’s proprietary polyfoam and it is therefore difficult to accurately assess how supportive it is. Because the Hyphen foam comfort layer is only 2 inches thick, there is a concern that this may place an increased burden on the bed’s supporting layer. That’s a problem particularly for above average weight sleepers and those with problematic pressure points.

Conforming

Hyphen foam conforms in a way that is similar to memory foam, without the “tight hug” or sinkage. It responds to alleviate pain and pressure points.

Durability

The Hyphen mattress has not been available long enough to accurately assess its long-term durability. To approximate expected lifespan, we can assess the quality of the materials used. In the case of Hyphen, the foams are of an average density, so we would estimate an average lifespan of 6-8 years with normal use.

Sex

This foams used in the Hyphen are firm enough and have enough bounciness that they should not restrict movement or otherwise hamper any sexual activity.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a Hyphen mattress?

When reading a mattress review, it’s important to remember that choosing the right bed is a very personal decision. It’s important to always consider your own preferences, sleep position, body weight and type, and any health conditions you have. Keep your own individual comfort and support needs in mind as well. We also recommend taking advantage of any sleep trial to make sure that the bed you choose is indeed the right fit for you.

With all that in mind, please consider this subjective customer feedback for the Hyphen mattress:

Looking at the chart below, you can see that the Hyphen received mixed reviews depending on the weight and typical position of the sleeper. Average weight sleepers (those weighing between 130-230 lbs) and above average weight sleepers (those weighing more than 230 lbs) rated the mattress as “good.” As did average weight and below average weight sleepers (those weighing less than 130 lbs) who sleep on their backs. Below average weight stomach sleepers also gave the Hyphen a “good” rating.

Below Average Weight (under 130 lbs) Average Weight (130-230 lbs) Above Average Weight (above 230 lbs)
Side Sleepers Fair Good Good
Back Sleepers Good Good Fair
Stomach Sleepers Good Fair Fair

The Hyphen uses a proprietary foam that seeks to combine the contouring found in memory foam with the more responsive bounce of latex. This “Hyphen foam” doesn’t trap heat to the same extent as traditional foam nor does it restrict movement in the same way.
