Joybed sets themselves apart by taking a completely different approach from the average mattress start-up. Whereas many of their competitors were founded within the past five years, Joybed has been making mattresses since 1889. More pertinently, they stick firmly to all-natural materials and are against the use of foam in mattresses. As of 2019, Joybed makes three mattresses: the Joybed LX, the Joybed LXC, and the Joybed LXP. This review focuses on the Joybed LXC.
The Joybed LXC is an innerspring mattress. Its support core is made of individually wrapped coils that conform to the sleeper’s body. Topping the innersprings are several layers of fibers made out of cotton and plant fibers—all-natural materials with many benefits including a lack of chemicals, hypoallergenic properties, and cooling properties.
Due to Joybed’s unusual all-natural and foam-free approach, as well as their dedication to improving a traditional design, their mattresses set themselves apart from the foam and foam hybrid mattresses that currently dominate the market. In this review, we’ll break down the Joybed LXC’s features and specs, before analyzing its performance based on a range of qualifications and breaking down its suitability for different types of sleepers.

On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, the Joybed LXC falls at a 6.5. This puts it towards the firmer end of the medium category, which means it balances plushness and firmness at a level that would suit all sleeping positions and most weights.
Joybed mattresses can be purchased exclusively from their website, and they deliver to all 50 states.
The Joybed LXC is primarily made of a support core of innerspring coils. Individually wrapped in all-natural materials, they’re designed to conform to the different parts of the sleeper’s body, with targeted pressure-point relief and weight support. Topping the support core are two comfort layers. At the top is a fabric layer of tightly woven fibers taken from farm plants like beans and potatoes. Breathable, chemical-free, and biodegradable, it serves as a fire barrier. Underneath is a layer of cotton fibers. In addition to being soft and comfortable, the cotton layer is also hypoallergenic, breathable, and moisture-wicking to keep the sleeper cool.
Finally, the whole mattress is encased in a 100% organic cotton cover.
Joybed ships via UPS to anywhere in the United States, including a tracking number with every order. Orders in the contiguous U.S. ship for free, with an extra fee for Alaska and Hawaii. It takes 1-2 business days for orders to ship, and 3-5 business days for delivery to be completed in most zip codes. Mattresses are shipped “bed-in-a-box” style, compressed inside a cardboard box and wrapped in plastic.
Joybed offers white glove delivery through a “specialized carrier” that includes old mattress removal. This entire service costs $150, and results in a 1-2 week delivery time.
Like all Joybed mattresses, the LXC comes with a 120-night-long sleep trial. Unlike some companies, Joybed doesn’t require you to try out the mattress for a minimum of 30 days, so if you return the mattress at any time prior to the end of this trial, Joybed will refund the full price. Because the company doesn’t resell returned mattresses, they will either arrange for your returned mattress to be picked up or organize it with a local donation center.
Joybed offers a limited 10-year-warranty with all of their mattresses. In order for the warranty to apply, the damages or defects have to come from a pre-approved list, with an additional list of qualifications that have to be met. If the mattress does qualify for the warranty, it’s up to Joybed whether the mattress gets replaced or repaired.
Joybed LXC Mattress Performance
Because people inevitably adjust their sleeping positions throughout the night, whether a mattress can isolate that movement so a bedmate doesn’t feel it can be a very important detail. This is dictated by the mattress’ motion transfer abilities.
Due to their density and contouring qualities, foam mattresses isolate motion quite well, while innerspring mattresses have more motion transfer. Due to the coils in the Joybed LXC’s construction, it offers the lower motion isolation typical of innerspring mattresses.
As the name suggests, edge support refers to the ability of a mattress to provide support along the perimeter, so that sleepers don’t sink or fall when they move away from the mattress’ center. Traditionally speaking, foam mattresses have poor edge support, while innerspring mattresses have superior edge support. The Joybed LXC is no exception, with plenty of support on the mattress’ edge.
A mattress that keeps the sleeper cool throughout the night is essential for good sleep hygiene. This depends entirely on the mattress’ heat retention abilities. Generally speaking, denser mattress materials such as foam pack in heat and prevent airflow.
Because the Joybed LXC is made of innerspring coils, air is allowed to flow throughout the mattress, which allows heat to disperse. Additionally, its comfort layers are made out of plant fibers and cotton, both of which are breathable and moisture-wicking, preventing heat from being trapped and drawing sweat away from the body.
Off-gassing refers to the smell that accompanies many new mattresses, namely those made out of foam and latex, which appears during the unpackaging stage and usually disperses within a few hours to a few days.
Because the Joybed LXC contains no foam or other synthetic materials, it has no off-gassing.
An unsupportive mattress is not only uncomfortable, but harmful, leading to issues like back pain. Like many other innerspring mattresses, the Joybed LXC provides excellent support without sinkage or sag. Additionally, its individually wrapped coils allow it the sleeper’s weight to be supported relative to the weight and pressure exerted, while the cotton fibers in its topmost layers don’t compress as much as memory foam and provide additional cushioning and support.
The ability of a mattress to contour to the sleeper’s body provides not only comfort but spinal alignment and pressure point relief. This is especially important for side sleepers, whose position results in different weights being exerted onto the mattress and requires the cushioning to respond accordingly. Memory foam, with its signature “hug,” provides sleepers with the most conformity. The Joybed LXC’s individually wrapped coils, however, are designed to conform and contour, aided by the soft comfort layers of flexible fibers.
Because of the natural fiber used in its construction, especially cotton, as well as the mattress’ individually wrapped coils, the Joybed LXC is quite durable and not likely to degrade over time.
How good a mattress is for sex depends on a couple factors, namely its bounce, resilience, and noise. Generally speaking, the bouncier the mattress, the better it is for sex. Innerspring mattresses are traditionally quite bouncy. The Joybed LXC’s individually wrapped coil construction and compressed-fiber comfort layers make it very suitable for sex, although the noise of the innerspring coils may be an impediment for some.
Traditionally, innerspring mattresses are the noisiest type, especially compared to foam and latex. As a result, sleepers will experience some noise when moving around on the Joybed LXC.
How Do Customers Rate the Joybed LXC Mattress?
What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a Joybed LXC Mattress?
Side Sleepers: Because the Joybed LXC has a 6.5 firmness, it falls in the medium-firm category, which is generally suitable for sleepers of all positions and most weights. That said, it’s on the firm end of medium, which may make it too hard for some side sleepers who need more sinkage, plushness, and contouring than the Joybed LXC provides. Side sleepers on the lighter side may be better off finding a softer mattress that incorporates foam in its top-most layers, which hugs the body and has high sinkage. Meanwhile, sleepers heavier than 230 pounds may want to look for a firmer mattress.
Back Sleepers: The Joybed LXC is an excellent mattress for back sleepers, who need plenty of firmness and support for comfort. Not only does its 6.5 firmness level work well for most back sleepers, but the individually wrapped coils in its construction also provides targeted support for different parts of the body, such as the shoulders and hips, which need to be cushioned when you’re sleeping on your back. That said, back sleepers heavier than 230 pounds may want to look for a mattress at a higher firmness level to prevent excessive sinkage and offer sufficient support.
Stomach Sleepers: As with back sleepers, stomach sleepers should find the Joybed LXC at an excellent firmness level to suit their needs. Additionally, the comfort layers of plant fibers and cotton should keep the chest well-cushioned, while the individually wrapped coils will keep all parts of the body supported proportional to the weight distribution, without sinking under the hips or shoulders. Just like with back sleepers, though, stomach sleepers heavier than 230 pounds may want to look for a firmer mattress for enough support.

The Joybed LXC is a great option for sleepers who don’t like the issues inherent in the all-foam and foam-incorporating hybrid mattresses that are so popular in the industry. Its use of all-natural materials keep it naturally hypoallergenic, chemical-free, durable, and soft, which makes it highly suitable for sleepers who react badly to synthetic materials and want to shop green. Additionally, the individually wrapped coils, cotton, and plant fibers combine to keep the sleeper cooler than even gel-infused memory foam mattresses.
Despite their more traditional take on mattress construction, Joybed’s approach to everything else is entirely modern, keeping with industry standards when it comes to their shipping, delivery, return, warranty, and sleep trial policies. Overall, the Joybed LXC is a well-constructed, highly supportive, and soft mattress that manages to beat out its competitors in areas like temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support, and off-gassing without resorting to the use of synthetic materials and high-tech bandaids. It’s an excellent and eco-friendly choice for the vast majority of sleepers.
