Lucid Mattress Review

After launching in 2016, Lucid Mattress has rolled out an extensive product catalog with diverse designs and competitive prices.

Lucid has three main product categories -- all-foam, foam layered with latex, and hybrid -- and memory foam is commonly featured in all of these categories. The majority of the Lucid beds have a firmness feel ranging from soft to medium.

The combination of plush and responsive beds makes the Lucid mattresses a worthwhile option to explore for people who prefer a softer, more luxurious feel. A handful of firmer, more resilient beds are available within their product line as well.

Though generally straightforward in their design, Lucid mattresses are worth a look for shoppers operating within a tight budget and who want a mattress with significant contouring.

Construction

The interior construction of the Lucid mattress depends on the model. To help organize their product catalog, the mattresses have been divided into three categories: all-foam, foam combined with latex, and hybrids.

All-Foam

The all-foam mattresses are made only with memory foam and poly foam materials. Each has a comfort layer of memory foam and a base of support polyfoam. Some have layers of different types of memory foam including gel-infused and bamboo charcoal memory foam.

The specific thickness and layering for each model is listed below.

Foam With Latex

All Lucid mattresses in this category use a combination of latex, memory foam, and/or polyfoam.

Internal layering details for these 2 mattresses is outlined in the table below.

MattressConstruction
10" latex foam3” of latex; 7” of support polyfoam
16” natural latex and memory foam1” of bamboo-charcoal memory foam; 3” of gel-infused memory foam; 2” of latex; 10” of support polyfoam

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses have a support core made with innerspring coils. Above the coils are layers of foam and/or latex to offer more contouring and pressure-point relief.

In the Lucid hybrids, the innerspring coils are buttressed by 1” layers of support polyfoam. They are also surrounded on the perimeter by a layer of polyfoam that is designed to enhance edge support.

Specific construction components for each hybrid model are listed in the following table.

Shipping

Lucid offers free shipping for their mattresses within the contiguous United States. The mattress comes compressed in a box that is delivered to your doorstep. Lucid notes that it may take up to 48 hours for the mattress to completely decompress and reach its full size.

Lucid does not ship to Hawaii or Alaska on purchases made directly through their website. Shipping to Alaska and Hawaii may be available when purchasing on Amazon.

Additional Services

Lucid does not offer any type of white glove services like installation or haul-away of an old mattress.

Sleep Trial

The return window for Lucid mattresses is 30 days. Within those 30 days, if you decide that you want to return the mattress, you can do so for a full refund.

Lucid does not clearly state how return shipping is handled if you decide to return the mattress. You may be required to package the mattress so that it can be picked up by UPS.

If you purchase a mattress through Amazon, you will be covered by Amazon’s 30-night sleep trial rather than the trial offered by Lucid. Any return would be coordinated directly with Amazon.

Warranty

Lucid offers a 10-year warranty on all of their mattresses. However, warranty terms are vague and not posted on the company’s website. As a result, it is difficult to put much, if any, stock in the value of the company’s warranty.

Lucid Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The all-foam mattresses from Lucid do an excellent job of motion isolation. With memory foam in their comfort layer, they are able to conform closely to the body without transferring motion across the foam.

The hybrid models with thicker comfort layers are effective in isolating motion although they transfer slightly more than the all-foam mattresses.

The 10” latex mattress will transfer the most motion because of the bounce of latex in the comfort layer, but for most sleepers the motion isolation will be sufficient to prevent sleep disruptions.

Edge Support

The hybrid mattresses provide the best edge support among the Lucid mattresses. In those beds, the innerspring coils and the polyfoam reinforcements around them help prevent dramatic sinkage at the edge.

Edge support is weak in the all-foam models, especially the models with a very plush feel. In those beds, it may be difficult for some people to sit comfortably on the edge of the bed as the foam is prone to significant compression.

The models with latex will have some increased resilience around the edge, but customers can still expect noticeable sinking.

Heat Retention

Mattresses with a comfort layer made with memory foam have a propensity to retain heat. This happens because the contouring cuts off airflow around the body and because the material itself retains heat, softening it even further.

The all-foam models generally use gel-infused memory foam to try to combat heat buildup, but for people who tend to sleep hot, this material may still pose temperature regulation issues.

Latex does not have the same issues as memory foam, and for this reason the 10” latex model has the least heat retention.

The hybrid mattresses from Lucid have some additional resilience and permit more airflow deep in the bed, but because many still have memory foam in their comfort layer, they continue to pose risks for sleeping hot.

Off-Gassing

Virtually all of the Lucid mattresses can be expected to emit an odor when they are first removed from their packaging after delivery. If your bedroom is well-ventilated, the smell should fade within a few hours up to a few days.

The least off-gassing will occur with the 10” latex mattress because latex tends not to offgas as much as memory foam. Nevertheless, some “new mattress smell” should still be expected with that model.

Support

Support from the Lucid mattresses can vary significantly. In general, memory foam provides solid support when used in the comfort layer. Support comes from this material’s ability to compress and cushion in response to how any given sleeper’s weight and pressure is distributed.

In some of the memory foam mattresses, though, the foam may be too soft to effectively cushion the body. In other models, the foam layer is too thin to offer considerable support. Both of these issues are more likely to affect sleepers over 230 pounds.

The hybrid mattresses offer support through the combination of encased innerspring coils and foam layers to enhance pressure point relief.

The models with latex can benefit from that material’s ability to cushion the body but with greater rebound that makes it especially well-suited for people who change sleeping positions frequently or who are worried about sinking too deeply into a mattress.

Conforming

Most of the Lucid mattresses offer extensive conforming through the use of soft memory foam. Memory foam in general closely hugs the body, and this effect is enhanced when the foam is more plush.

This close conforming occurs in the hybrid mattresses as well because of their use of memory foam in the top layers.

The 10” latex mattress will not have nearly the same level of hug, but it is able to contour to the body enough to help keep the spine aligned.

Durability

Because these mattresses have only been sold since 2016, there is no extended track record to evaluate the durability of the Lucid mattresses. Lucid does not openly disclose the density of their foams, which is information that could help gauge the longevity of the mattresses.

Overall, we expect these mattresses to provide several years worth of performance but may fall short of holding up in top-shape over 6-8 years.

Sex

Soft memory foam like that used in most of the Lucid mattresses can pose barriers to sexual activity. This can happen when movement on the mattress is inhibited by how much sink is permitted by the foam and how slowly it rebounds to take its original shape.

The hybrid and latex mattresses will pose less of an issue because they have added resilience and springiness from the innerspring coils and/or latex layer.

How Do Customers Rate the Lucid Mattresses?

Lucid does not post reviews from their customers on their own website. They do not have reviews for individual models on Google shopping, and none of the models have been reviewed by Consumer Reports.

Shoppers on Amazon have left reviews for many of the beds made by Lucid. In some cases, the reviews for different models are grouped together. The available reviews on Amazon for each model are listed below.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to the Lucid Mattresses?

Because of the diversity of the products from Lucid, it is necessary to consider your own situation to determine which of their mattresses is most likely to suit your needs.

The very thin mattresses, the 5” and 6” memory foam models, are generally geared toward smaller and younger sleepers. They may be viable as well for sleepers who are of a low body weight.

When considering other mattresses, two things to think about are your body weight and the sleeping position you find yourself in the most.

12" Plush Gel Memory Foam Mattress

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a mattress that has the right combination of softness and responsiveness to make sure that the pressure points at the shoulders and hips can be properly cushioned. However, side sleepers over 230 pounds can have issues if the bed is too soft.

Given the firmness levels of the Lucid mattresses, they are the best fit for side sleepers under 130 pounds who will not sink as deeply into a plush bed. Ratings for side sleepers for each Lucid bed can be found in the tables below.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers normally need a firmer mattress to prevent their torso and abdomen from sinking deeply into the mattress and out of line with the rest of their body. At the same time, responsiveness from the comfort layer can give beneficial cushioning to the heavier parts of the body.

Many of the Lucid mattresses are far too plush for most back sleepers. Back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds and don’t sink as much into a bed may be able to effectively maintain spinal alignment on these plush models, but other back sleepers likely cannot.

For this reason, the best options for back sleepers are the firmer models and those with hybrid and/or latex construction that limits excessive sink.

Ratings for each mattress for back sleepers is listed below and categorized by mattress type and body weight.

Stomach Sleepers

For the vast majority of stomach sleepers, it is imperative to have a firm mattress. Without a firm bed, the midsection sinks, pushing the body in a U-shape that misaligns the spine. A firm mattress can head placement difficult, and some stomach sleepers feel as though they can’t breathe well on a soft mattress.

Virtually none of the plush Lucid mattresses are viable for stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers with a very light body weight and who want a softer feel may find these beds to be acceptable.

The firmer Lucid mattresses will provide better support except that many have comfort layers that could be too thin for stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.

The following tables provide specific information about each model and how it is likely to perform for stomach sleepers of different body weights.

Our Verdict

For customers looking for a budget mattress that features a responsive material like memory foam, the Lucid mattresses may be a good fit.

While the Lucid Mattress product line can be overwhelming, organizing the options into categories can help you understand your choices. In general, the all-foam beds will be the softest and most contouring. The latex and hybrid options will have more bounce and in some cases a firmer comfort feel.

Because of the design and firmness, these mattresses tend to be the best fit for sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. Sleepers under 130 pounds have significantly more viable options among the Lucid products.

While the price for the Lucid beds is appealing, customers should bear in mind that they only come with a 30-night sleep trial that is substantially shorter than most other mattress companies. The company’s warranty information is vague, making it difficult to know how much protection the warranty provides for your purchase.
