Best Mattress Stores in Minneapolis

Updated on August 8, 2020

August of 1992 marked a momentous occasion in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. It was in that month that the doors first opened to the Mall of America, the largest mall in the country that still today draws over 40 million visitors every year.

While this project stands out as a literal landmark to the retail experience, it’s not the only place that people in the Twin Cities can go shopping for the things they need. In this growing metropolis, residents can find diverse options for excellent shopping.

When it comes to buying a new mattress, people in Minneapolis have no shortage of choices for where to shop. Of course, buying online is an increasingly popular option, but there are also well-regarded stores, including one in the Mall of America, where shoppers can find high-quality mattresses, prices, and service.

In this guide, we’ll provide a shortcut to finding the best mattress stores in Minneapolis. We explain where customers who want to check out online brands can find them, and we also introduce the top local mattress stores in the Twin Cities.

Minneapolis, MN

Physical Stores for Online Brands

After decades of being an industry-based exclusively on brick-and-mortar stores, the mattress business has witnessed a huge transition toward online sales. More than a dozen companies have launched with a focus on online, direct-to-consumer mattress sales.

Though the e-commerce route has been successful, some of the bigger companies that started online are leveraging their established brand name to open retail showrooms where customers can try out their products in person. In many of these stores, mattresses are available to take home the same day or to have delivered promptly after purchasing.

In the Minneapolis area, there is only one online-based brand that has opened a brick-and-mortar showroom, which is located at the Mall of America. Details about this store can be found in the following table.

Casper

For most people in the industry, Casper is the company that brought online mattress sales to prime time. The company invested heavily in developing a high-quality product — the original Casper mattress – and in making customers comfortable with buying it online without having ever seen or felt it in person.

The original Casper mattress is still one of the best-selling online mattresses. It has an all-foam design that features memory foam and a specialty polyfoam in its top layers. Those two foams complement one another to cushion pressure points and promote proper alignment of the spine.

To expand on the success of the original Casper mattress, Casper launched the Casper Hybrid, which features a similar comfort system but has a support core of pocketed innerspring coils instead of high-density polyfoam. The company’s product development team also was hard at work developing advanced features for the Casper Wave and Wave Hybrid mattresses, which are luxury offerings that deliver high-end performance.

Casper opened a retail showroom at the Mall of America at which customers can see these four mattresses and test them out. The showroom sells other popular Casper products as well, including their Glow Light, blankets, sheets, pillows, and bedroom furniture.

Retailers Featuring Online Brands

There is more than one way to get an up-close and in-person look at the offerings of online-based brands. While the Casper Mall of America showroom is the only brand-specific store in the Twin Cities, other top-selling online brands have distribution agreements with brick-and-mortar retail stores.

The following table lists the online brands with these agreements and the retail partner stores where you can scope out their mattresses.

Purple Mattresses – Mattress Firm & Macy’s

The original Purple Mattress and the All-New Purple Hybrid have won acclaim from customers for providing a feel that is distinct from many other beds on the market. Central to this feel is an innovative design that employs a special layer, called the Smart Comfort Grid, in the top of the mattress.

The Smart Comfort Grid is an arrangement of squares that is made of a material called a Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This material is responsive, meaning that it can contour to the body, but it is also bouncy, allowing it to quickly spring back to its normal shape when you move on the bed. As a result, the Smart Comfort Grid relieves pressure points but prevents excessive sinking into the mattress. As an added bonus, it has great temperature regulation properties, making it one of the most popular choices for hot sleepers.

In the original Purple mattress, a two-inch layer of the Smart Comfort Grid sits above layers of high-density polyfoam. In the All-New Purple Hybrid, the Smart Comfort Grid is either two, three, or four inches thick (depending on the model), and the support core is made with sturdy innerspring coils.

The Purple mattresses are some of the easiest to check out in person because the company has created partnerships with both Mattress Firm and Macy’s, meaning that Purple is in hundreds of stores nationwide. To find the nearest store, you can search in the Purple Store Locator.

Casper Essential – Target

To supplement its core product line, Casper created the Casper Essential, a mattress with a straightforward all-foam design that could be offered at a lower price point accessible to a larger number of customers.

Despite its reduced price, the Casper Essential is still a solid buy. Its comfort system cushions the body, relieves pressure, and it helps isolate motion thanks to the use of both specialty polyfoam and open-cell memory foam. For customers looking for a great combination of performance and value, the Casper Essential is a worthy consideration.

Casper does not carry the Essential in its own retail stores; instead, it makes it available in select Target locations. Several Target stores in the Twin Cities offer the Essential, and an exact list can be found in the Casper Store Locator.

Leesa Mattresses – West Elm & Pottery Barn

Leesa is another company that has been able to successfully ride the growing wave of online mattress sales to build its brand name. The original Leesa mattress and the Leesa Hybrid (formerly known as the Sapira) are the company’s lead products, and each offers a comfortable, pressure-relieving mattress that appeals to a wide range of sleepers.

Both of the Leesa mattresses have a comfort system that is made up of two distinct layers. One of those layers is memory foam, which has a proven track record as a material that can cushion the body and reduce the impact at key pressure points. The second material is a specialty polyfoam developed by Leesa that has many latex-like qualities, meaning that it has more bounce and resists excessive sagging.

In the original Leesa, these two layers sit on top of a base of high-density polyfoam. In the Leesa Hybrid, the support core is made with innerspring coils that are individually-wrapped for greater responsiveness.

Thanks to partnership agreements with Pottery Barn and West Elm, Leesa mattresses are available to try out in many of these home furnishings stores nationwide, including several locations in the Twin Cities. For detailed information about these stores in the Minneapolis area, you can consult the online Leesa Store Finder.

Multiple Online Brands – Sleep Sherpa Showroom

Sleep Sherpa was founded by someone who initially was on his own quest to find a great mattress. After going through that process, he started a mattress review website and eventually opened the Sleep Sherpa mattress showroom in Edina.

Something that makes the Sleep Sherpa showroom distinct is that it focuses on brands that are based online. For example, at this store customers can get a closer look at popular brands like DreamCloud, Nectar, Avocado, Puffy, WinkBeds, Allswell, Nest Bedding, Rivet, Brooklyn Bedding, Leesa, Brentwood Home, Cocoon by Sealy, Yaasa, and others.

The prices offered in the showroom are the same as those offered online, but if you purchase through Sleep Sherpa, they receive a commission for the sale.
