Updated on December 11, 2019

Whether it’s dinner delivery or online shopping, New Yorkers have long been ahead of the curve in maximizing the convenience of making purchases from the comfort of home. This has been true in online mattresses as well; as the industry has developed, New York has been a huge market for growth with thousands opting for a “bed-in-a-box” brought to their doorstep.

At the same time, there are still many people who want to see a mattress and lie down on it before making a purchase. And though New York may be the City That Never Sleeps, it sure has a lot of great mattress stores.

For customers who want to scope out mattresses in a brick-and-mortar store, New York offers multiple compelling options. Several online brands have showrooms in the city or nearby, and you can also find online brands at some retail partners. In addition, well-loved local mattress stores provide a place to check out various brands at the same time.

This guide covers all of these options and provides an easy jumping-off point for anyone in New York City who wants to find a great mattress and do their shopping in person.

Physical Stores for Online Brands

In the last few years, the online mattress industry has experienced remarkable growth. As many brands have become more familiar to consumers, they have expanded beyond just the online space in order to give customers an opportunity to view mattresses live and in person.

In New York City, there are seven different online brands that have showrooms where you can take a look at their products. Some of these stores have mattresses in stock that you can buy on-the-spot, or they can help arrange delivery, sometimes even for that same day.

The following table gives an overview of these companies and their showrooms.

The following sections provide additional background about these brands and their mattress showrooms.

Casper is easily one of the best-known names in the mattress industry. In a short period of time, the company helped bring online mattresses to the masses. Their first mattress, the Original Casper, is still extremely popular. It is designed with multiple layers of foam to offer a Medium Firm feel with excellent support.

To build on the popularity of their first mattress, Casper launched multiple other mattress lines. The Casper Hybrid has a similar design to the Original except that its support core is made with pocketed innerspring coils. The Casper Wave and Casper Wave Hybrid are high-end models with thoughtful design and plenty of extra touches to provide a luxury sleeping experience. On the other end of the spectrum, the Casper Essential is a no-frills bed with good performance and an entry-level price point.

All of the Casper mattresses are on display at the Casper New York Store at the World Trade Center. All of the beds except the Essential can be found at the Casper NoHo Store in Manhattan. Casper is in the process of opening a third store, which will be located at City Point in Brooklyn. These stores let you see and try out the Casper mattresses and see their other products including sheets, pillows, comforters, the Glow Light nightlight, and bed frames.

Leesa is another well-known brand that started by selling mattresses online. The original Leesa mattress has an all-foam design made with three layers. The top layer is a proprietary polyfoam that blends both contouring and bounce. The second layer is pressure-relieving memory foam, and the bottom layer is high-density support polyfoam.

After the successful launch of the Leesa, the company developed a second mattress, the Leesa Hybrid. This design employs pocketed innerspring coils instead of foam in the support core, but it still takes advantage of the specialty polyfoam and memory foam in the comfort layer.

The Leesa Dream Gallery in SoHo has both of these mattresses on display for you to try out. Other products from Leesa, including pillows, mattress protectors, and bed bases, are available as well. At this location, Leesa hosts the series “Bedside Chats” that features talks about operating businesses with social responsibility.

A major selling point of the Helix mattresses is that they can match you with a bed that fits your specific needs based on your comfort preferences, sleeping position, body weight, and other factors. Online, Helix does this with a Sleep Quiz on their website, but at their in-person showroom, you can work with a sleep specialist to help you identify the ideal mattress option.

While Helix has multiple different models within their product line, all of them are hybrids. They use a support core of individually-wrapped innerspring coils with a mixture of foam layers above them. Those layers include Helix Dynamic Foam, a responsive polyfoam, and Memory Plus Foam, which provides notable contouring and pressure relief. The Helix beds are available in a Standard design and in a Luxe model with an extra foam layer.

The Helix New York City Showroom is located in the Flatiron District. An appointment, which can be made online, is required to visit the showroom. The exact address will be sent to you after making an appointment. In the showroom, you can try out different mattress models from Helix and see their other bedding and bedroom furniture products.

Nest Bedding has an extensive product line that has been a hit with customers since the company started in 2011. The company has options to suit virtually all people including all-foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses. Some of the most popular options from Nest Bedding are the Alexander Signature Series Flippable Mattress (with a different firmness level on each side), the Alexander Signature Hybrid, and the Love & Sleep mattress.

The company has also seen growing customer enthusiasm for their all-latex and latex hybrid mattresses. These models are made with certified organic materials that have been especially well-received among eco-conscious shoppers. Nest Bedding has received acclaim for their options for kids, too, especially the Big Kids’ Bed (BKB).

You can visit the Nest Bedding New York Showroom in Manhattan to get a closer look at these products and to see how they feel when you lie down on them. Nest’s other products, including bedding and bed frames, are available to check out at the showroom as well.

Eight Sleep

Eight Sleep is a brand that has differentiated itself by employing advanced technology in their mattresses. This began with the original Eight Smart Bed, which used a sensitive sleep tracking system on the top of the bed to gather data about your sleep patterns.

Eight Sleep took things to a new level with The Pod, a mattress that utilizes advanced sensors and data algorithms alongside a fluid-based temperature control system. This allows the bed to automatically heat up or cool down as necessary throughout the night to make sure that you’re always at a comfortable temperature. At the same time, the bed collects information about your sleep so that you can optimize your sleep habits. The technology integrates with other WiFi devices, like Amazon’s Alexa, to provide for easy controls.

Customers who want to see for themselves how this technology works can do so at the Eight Sleep Suite in Manhattan. Visits to this showroom are by appointment only, and the address is provided after an appointment has been arranged. Eight Sleep offers other accessories including a specialty pillow, mattress protector, and bed frame.

Essentia is a company that places an emphasis on making mattresses with materials that are natural and free of allergens and chemicals. They have three product lines — Lifestyle, Performance, and Wholebody — that utilize organic latex and the company’s “Natural Memory Foam.”

The Essentia Natural Memory Foam is formulated with organic materials to cultivate a feel just like that of traditional memory foam. The difference is that traditional memory foam is made using petrochemicals and other additives. As a result, the Essentia mattresses carry special appeal for people who want an extremely supportive mattress but want eco-friendly materials.

The Essentia New York Showroom in Manhattan provides an opportunity to check out these innovative materials in a brick-and-mortar store. Along with the mattresses, you can see Essentia’s other bedroom products including pillows, sheets, and bed frames.

Keetsa has a diverse set of product offerings that include memory foam mattresses and hybrids. Their mattresses make use of the company’s BioFoam, which replaces 12% of the usual petrochemicals used in making foam with castor oil. The BioFoam also includes green tea extract to try to boost the long-term freshness of the mattress and its calming effects.

The memory foam options from Keetsa are the Cloud and the Tea Leaf Supreme. Both are all-foam beds, and the Tea Leaf Supreme has a thicker overall comfort layer. Hybrid options from Keetsa include the Keetsa Plus, Keetsa Pillow Plus, the Tea Leaf Classic, and the Tea Leaf Dream. These beds make use of a support core of iCoils, which are responsive pocketed innerspring coils.

The Keetsa New York Showroom in SoHo lets you test out these mattresses and have a warm cup of tea at the same time. Other Keetsa products, including pillows, sheets, and bases for your mattress, can also be seen at the showroom.

The Avocado Green Mattress is designed to meet high standards for eco-conscious production. The interior of the mattress is made with Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified latex and a thick layer of pocketed innerspring coils. The cotton and wool in the mattress is also certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This mattress boasts serious environmental bona fides, and customers love both its sustainability and its support.

This mattress is offered in both a Standard model and a Pillow-Top, which is slightly softer in terms of its overall feel. Both beds provide an excellent blend of responsiveness and bounce.

The Avocado Experience Center in Hoboken, New Jersey has these models on display for you to try out in person. Other Avocado products, including pillows, bedding, and a bed foundation, are on display at this Experience Center as well. Though it is not technically in New York, it provides a nearby option for people in New York City to get a firsthand look at Avocado’s eco-friendly product line.

Bear offers two mattresses, the Original Bear Mattress and the Bear Hybrid. A distinguishing feature for both is the Celliant textile that is used in the mattress cover. This specialty material converts body heat to infrared energy, which both keeps you cool through the night and promotes muscle and tissue recovery. Not surprisingly, the mattresses from Bear are especially popular among athletes and people with aches and pains.

The Bear Mattress is an all-foam option that has gel-infused memory foam as well as specialty polyfoam in its comfort layers. The Bear Hybrid has responsive and contouring polyfoams placed above a support core of pocketed innerspring coils.

At the Bear Mattress Showroom in Hoboken, the company provides a space where you can take a closer look and try out each of these mattresses. You can also scope out the company’s bed bases, sheets, pillows, and other bedding products.

Retailers Featuring Online Brands

To see an online mattress brand in person doesn’t always require going to a specific company’s showroom. A number of companies that began selling only online have now started to showcase products in select retail stores.

Casper Essential at Target

The Casper Essential is the most basic of the Casper mattresses, and it is also available at the most affordable price point. The Essential is an 11-inch tall all-foam mattress that includes both memory foam and a breathable and responsive polyfoam. It is an appealing option for shoppers intrigued by the Casper brand but who have a more limited budget.

The Casper Essential is on display at the Casper store at the World Trade Center. It is also available at one Target store, located at the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. It is currently not available at other Target stores in New York City. To check for the most up-to-date availability, you can visit the Casper Store Locator.

Tuft & Needle Mint at Crate & Barrel

Tuft & Needle has built their reputation by disrupting the traditional mattress industry with high-performance, high-value mattresses. The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is the company’s more robust option, featuring an extra layer of Adaptive Foam, a specialty polyfoam, that powers the comfort layer of the Tuft & Needle beds.

The Tuft & Needle Mint can be seen in person at two Crate & Barrel stores in the New York City area. One is located in the city while the other is in Manhasset. It is important to know that only the Mint is available through Crate & Barrel. The Original Tuft & Needle is only offered online and in specific Tuft & Needle branded showrooms.

Purple Mattresses at Mattress Firm

What started out as an online sensation has now become even more widely available. The mattresses made by Purple, which were first only available online, are now offered in most Mattress Firm stores, which are easily found across the country.

A key to the Purple mattresses are their comfort layer that features the Smart Comfort Grid, a special material (known as a hyper-elastic polymer) that provides unique mattress performance. This material offers pinpoint compression to cushion your body but maintains notable bounce as it can quickly retake its shape when pressure is removed. Its open-air structure keeps it from retaining heat, making it a popular choice among hot sleepers.

The original Purple mattress is made with two inches of the Smart Comfort Grid and all foam layers beneath it. The All-New Purple is a hybrid that uses a support core of pocketed innerspring coils. The All-New Purple comes in three models that differ based on the thickness of the Smart Comfort Grid; customers can choose from a comfort layer that is two, three, or four inches thick.

There are multiple Mattress Firm locations in and around New York City where you can try out the Purple mattress offerings. To see a list of stores nearby, you can consult the Mattress Firm Store Locator.

Leesa Mattresses at West Elm and Pottery Barn

For customers who want to see the Leesa or Leesa Hybrid mattresses in person, the Leesa Dream Gallery in SoHo, described in the previous section, is a great option; however, these mattresses can also be found in many West Elm and Pottery Barn stores.

Both West Elm and Pottery Barn are chains that offer housewares, furniture, and other items for home decor. There are multiple locations in New York City and surrounding cities as well. To find the closest location to your home, you can use the Store Locator on the Leesa website.

Multiple Brands at the SleePare Showroom

SleePare is a unique concept for a mattress store. Instead of selling mattresses directly, they provide a space in which you can try out a wide range of online mattress models. After testing them out, you can opt to purchase through SleePare or on your own. If you purchase through SleePare, the company receives a commission for the sale.

A selling point for SleePare is that they provide the opportunity to try out numerous online brands under one roof. They have beds available to try from companies like Leesa, Casper, Purple, Saatva, Brooklyn Bedding, DreamCloud, Airweave, Nest Bedding, WinkBeds, Helix, Nectar, Lull, Brentwood Home, Layla, Puffy, Avocado, PlushBeds, and Brentwood Home.

The SleePare Showroom is located in Manhattan. An appointment is requested, but not required, to visit the showroom, and appointments can be made online or by phone. Pillows, sheets, and other bedding from different vendors is also available to view in the showroom.
