The Nectar mattress and the Loom & Leaf mattress are both mattress options sold online by popular companies. After launching in 2017, the Nectar soon became one of the most well-known bed-in-a-box mattresses. The Loom & Leaf mattress is produced by Saatva, a company that launched in 2011 and has gone on to produce several mattress models.

Nectar offers only one mattress option called “the Nectar,” which we’ll focus on in this comparison. Saatva produces several mattresses, including the Loom & Leaf foam mattress, the Zenhaven latex mattress, and the Saatva innerspring mattress. This comparison will focus on the Loom & Leaf mattress.

Choosing between the Nectar mattress and the Loom & Leaf mattress can be hard. Our comparison will give you a closer look at major factors that might influence which mattress is better for you.

Mattress Construction Comparison

Nectar

The Nectar mattress is 11 inches tall and composed of four foam layers. The cover of the mattress is composed of Tencel, which allows airflow. The top layer of the mattress is 1 inch of quilted gel memory foam for contouring and comfort. This layer is also designed to promote air circulation to better regulate body temperature.

The next layer of the mattress uses 3 inches of semi-open Lush Foam, which is a gel memory foam with a density of 3.5 pounds per cubic foot (PCF). This layer is intended to provide contouring, distribute your body weight evenly, and redistribute heat.

The third layer of the Nectar mattress is composed of 1.75 inches of Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam, which is designed to provide additional bounce, contouring, and pressure point relief.

The base layer of the Nectar mattress is 5.25 inches of support foam with a density of 2.2 PCF. This layer features molded channels to allow greater airflow while providing a stable foundation.

Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf is a 12-inch high mattress constructed of eco-friendly materials. These materials include multiple distinct foam layers designed to offer a combination of support, comfort, and breathability.

The Loom & Leaf mattress’s cover uses quilted organic cotton that is pulled and set in place by hand. This cover is designed to be breathable and flame retardant.

The mattress’s top layer is composed of 2 inches of 4 PCF proprietary Spinal Zone Gel. This layer aims to offer cooling while providing targeted lumbar support.

The next layer uses 2.5 inches of high-density 5 PCF premium memory foam that is both eco-friendly and naturally cool.

The support layer uses two pieces of foam. One is 5.5 inches of 1.8 PCF polyfoam, and the other is 2 inches of 1.6 PCF polyfoam. This support layer offers additional contouring. It is also designed to be breathable to promote a cooler night’s sleep.

Firmness Comparison

Mattress firmness refers to how hard or soft a mattress feels, but it also plays a major role in how well the mattress keeps the spine aligned.

Firmness levels are usually rated on a 10-point scale. A rating of 1 is assigned to very plush mattresses, while 10 refers to the hardest possible mattress.

The firmness of a mattress is determined by the mattress’s materials and construction. Materials like memory foam are often soft. However, memory foam and other soft materials can be layered to create firmer mattresses.

Firmness preferences are different for everyone. While most sleepers find a medium or medium-firm mattress acceptable, some sleepers prefer a harder or softer mattress. Sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds or enjoy a plush mattress might prefer a softer mattress. Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds or like a more solid surface may prefer a firmer mattress.

The Nectar mattress can be considered medium firm, ranking around a 6 on the firmness scale. Most sleepers should find this firmness acceptable.

The Loom & Leaf offers two firmness options: Relaxed Firm and Firm. The Relaxed Firm mattress ranks about 5.5 on the firmness scale, so it can be considered medium-firm. The Firm mattress is about an 8, so it is a truly firm mattress. The Relaxed Firm can accommodate most average sleepers. The Firm mattress might be a good choice for sleepers over 230 pounds or who appreciate a firmer surface.

Sleep Experience

Several factors can contribute to your overall sleep experience. The Nectar and the Loom & Leaf share some similarities in sleep experiences, but there are also some significant differences. Comparing the Nectar and the Loom & Leaf on the factors that influence sleep experience can give you insight into the benefits of each mattress.

Temperature Control

All-foam mattresses have a reputation for trapping heat against the body and sleeping hot. Both the Nectar and the Loom & Leaf are composed of foam, but they have some adaptations to reduce heat retention.

The Nectar mattress’s Tencel cover allows airflow. The mattress uses a gel memory foam top layer that aims to provide cooling. The second layer of the mattress features semi-open Lush Foam, which is designed to redistribute heat. The support layer uses molded channels to allow greater airflow.

The Loom & Leaf mattress offers some features that attempt to provide a cooler night’s sleep, including a layer of Spinal Zone Gel. Not only does this layer aim to provide cooling properties, but it also offers lumbar support. However, some owners feel the Loom & Leaf mattress retains heat.

If you tend to sleep hot, the Nectar may be a better option for temperature control.

Motion Transfer

Both the Nectar mattress and the Loom & Leaf mattress are constructed entirely of foam, which tends to absorb motion very well. Either mattress may provide sufficient motion isolation to prevent unnecessary disturbances from your partner moving during the night.

While foam mattresses tend to isolate motion well, the Loom & Leaf mattress earns exceptional ratings in this area, so it may be a good choice for you if you are frequently disturbed by your partner changing position during the night.

Responsiveness

A responsive mattress allows wider, heavier parts of your body to sink in enough to promote proper spinal alignment. The Nectar mattress and the Loom & Leaf mattress both offer features that provide responsiveness.

The Nectar mattress uses two layers of memory foam, which can allow the right parts of your body to sink in. This contouring could relieve pain and pressure.

The Loom & Leaf mattress uses a layer of proprietary Spinal Zone Gel to provide lumbar support and promote proper alignment.

Most sleepers should find both the Nectar and the Loom & Leaf mattresses sufficiently responsive.

Resilience and Bounce

Resilience is a mattress’s ability to regain its shape, and bounce is the quality of regaining its shape quickly. Since memory foam mattresses are designed to conform to the body, they do not traditionally offer as much resilience and bounce as innerspring mattresses.

To counteract this tendency, the Nectar mattress uses a layer of Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam intended to provide bounce.

The Loom & Leaf mattress’s foam may provide less resilience and bounce due to its emphasis on contouring.

Edge Support

Most all-foam mattresses lack reinforced edges. Without reinforced, the outer perimeter of the bed may compress too much under pressure, which can make it difficult to sit or sleep near the edge.

Neither the Nectar mattress nor the Loom & Leaf mattress offers reinforced edges, so sitting or sleeping near the edge could feel unstable. However, owners often rate the Nectar’s edge support better than other all-foam mattresses.

Off-gassing and Smell

New mattresses often have a slight smell from the manufacturing process. When a mattress is compressed for shipment, this can further trap smells. Both the Nectar mattress and the Loom & Leaf mattress may have an odor when first introduced to your home. The smell should dissipate within a few hours to a few days if left in a well-ventilated space. However, since the Loom & Leaf mattress isn’t compressed for shipment, it may suffer from less off-gassing.

Shipping, Trial, Warranty, and Returns

Knowing a company’s policies and procedures may make you more comfortable purchasing a mattress. Nectar and Loom & Leaf share some similar policies, but there are also some major differences.
