New Purple Mattress Review

After bursting onto the scene in 2015 with a massive Kickstarter campaign, Purple has become one of the most-recognized names in the mattress industry.

Purple’s success stems from the proprietary material, known as a Hyper-Elastic Polymer, that forms the Smart Comfort Grid in the comfort layer of their mattresses.

The New Purple mattress brings a new design that features this Smart Comfort Grid -- available in three different thicknesses -- above a support core of innerspring coils. The result is a mattress that excels in support, resilience, and temperature regulation.

New Purple Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is a strength of the New Purple mattress. The Smart Comfort Grid that makes up the top layer of the mattress is highly responsive and does not transfer significant motion.

Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may notice more motion because of the way that the squares of the Smart Comfort Grid compress; however, this is unlikely to be a serious disruption to most sleepers regardless of their weight.

Edge Support

Edge support is average in the New Purple mattress. The Smart Comfort Grid in the comfort layer is limited in its edge support, but the innerspring coils in the support layer help give some reinforcement to prevent collapsing at the edge.

Heat Retention

The New Purple Mattress sleeps cool and is a great choice for people who worry about overheating at night. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer used in the comfort layer does not retain heat, and the open spaces in the Smart Comfort Grid permit plenty of cooling airflow.

There is very little to no smell reported from the New Purple mattress according to customer reports.

The Smart Comfort Grid is an extremely supportive material. It is sensitive to pressure and the squares of the grid compress to accommodate the weight that is applied to them. As a result, the New Purple mattress can give more pinpoint relief to the parts of the body that need it most, promoting healthy spinal alignment.

Thanks to its responsiveness, the comfort layer offers substantial conforming and the ability to hug the body. This is especially true of the Purple 4 and Purple 3 that have thicker comfort layers and permit more sink into the mattress.

The New Purple mattress is new and does not have long-term data available regarding its durability. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer in Purple’s mattresses is an innovative material but may be prone to wearing down over time.

This mattress does not inhibit motion related to sexual activity. The innerspring support core increases bounce, and the Smart Comfort Grid is resilient, providing sufficient springiness to make for easy movement on top of the bed.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to the New Purple Mattress?

Finding the right model of the New Purple mattress can depend on your sleeping position and body weight.

Side sleepers tend to do better with softer mattresses. Responsive materials, such as the Smart Comfort Grid, can assist side sleepers in getting the cushioning they need at key pressure points like the shoulders and hips. However, heavier side sleepers may find that the comfort layer of the Purple 2 is too thin. The Purple 4 may be too soft for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

Back sleepers need to avoid a mattress that is too soft and that allows their torso to sink too far into the comfort layer. Lighter-weight back sleepers can do well with the Purple 2, 3, and 4 because of their responsiveness, but heavier back sleepers may find these mattresses to be too soft.

Stomach sleepers get the best results from firmer mattresses that don’t cause them to become misaligned from sinking into the mattress at the abdomen. In general, these mattresses are not ideal for stomach sleepers, but the Purple 2 and 3 can work well for stomach sleepers of average body weight.

Our Verdict

The New Purple mattress is a compelling choice for anyone looking for a fresh feel and performance in a mattress. This bed promotes spinal alignment and comfort through the combination of the Smart Comfort Grid with the bounce and stability of innerspring coils.

Customers of all body types and sleeping positions can benefit from the 3 firmness options, and in all models, the material stays exceptionally cool, preventing overheating during the night.

Though still new on the scene, the Purple 2, 3, and 4 feature an innovative approach that is a welcome change from the norm in online mattresses.
