Brooklyn Bedding, the parent company of the Plank Mattress, was formed by two brothers, John and Rob Merwin. The Merwin brothers transitioned from being mattress liquidators to mattress innovators. From the company’s inception in 1995 (then named R & S Mattress), they have meticulously researched the processes of manufacturing, buying, and selling mattresses. After a visit to China to learn about mattress production firsthand, they bought their own machinery and began manufacturing their products entirely in America. Their close vicinity to American customers allows them to offer high-quality mattresses at lower costs than companies with production overseas.

Brooklyn Bedding offers a number of different mattresses, each catering to different kinds of sleepers. They also sell sheets, pillows, toppers, and other sleep accessories. For the purposes of this review, we are going to be focusing on the Plank mattress, the newest addition to their line.

Inspired by the sleep traditions of Eastern Asia, the Plank is specially designed for sleepers who like a firm mattress. The Plank is also dual-sided and easily flippable, offering both firm and extra-firm options. A seven inch, high-density base foam layer is the foundation of the mattress and provides substantial spinal alignment support. This is topped with a two-inch layer of patented TitanFlex transitional foam, which gives the mattress additional compression support and cuts down on motion transfer. The upper side of the mattress–the “ultra-firm” setting–has a quilted, continuously stitched .75 inch top layer, which minimizes loft. The lower side–the “firm” setting–has a tack and jump top layer, which provides slightly more body-conforming cushioning while maintaining firmness. The Plank also comes with the option of patented phase change molecules (PPM) cooling panels for each side, which helps hot sleepers stay cool.

Are you one of those sleepers who can never seem to find a firm enough mattress? If so, you’re definitely going to want to read on.

The Plank is made up of four unique layers. Starting with the Plank turned “ultra-firm”-side-up:

  • Ultra-Firm Top Layer: .75 inch continually stitched quilted foam/poly-cotton.
  • TitanFlex Foam Transition Layer: Two inches of patented transitional TitanFlex foam.
  • High Density Foam Core: 7 inch block of high density base foam.
  • Firm Bottom Layer: 1.5 inch tack-and-jump stitch quilted foam/poly-cotton.

Additional cooling panels made from premium phase change molecules (PPCMs) can be added to both the top and the bottom of the mattress.

Free Fed-Ex Ground Shipping is available to all 48 contiguous tates. For shipping to Alaska and Hawaii, additional costs start at $125. Orders to Canada are shipped via UPS, with additional costs starting at $250.

The average time from order to delivery is around 3 to 7 business days (1-2 business days of production time, and 3-5 business days of transit time). Holidays may cause additional delays.

Before shipping, the mattress is compressed, wrapped in sturdy plastic, and boxed. Boxes vary in size, from 39” x 75” x 10” and 58 pounds for a Twin to 72” x 84” x 10” and 120 pounds for a California King.

For the mattress itself, no assembly is required. Once unpacked, it will decompress on its own.

Additional Services

The Plank mattress does not currently offer white glove delivery or any other additional services.

Sleep Trial

Plank offers a 120-day sleep trial, with the option to return starting 30 days from the date of delivery. A full refund is available if the mattress is returned within 120 days.

Plank mattresses come with a full 10-year warranty, beginning on the date of purchase. If certain defects occur during the warranty period, Brooklyn Bedding offers a “replace or repair” policy. Covered defects include deterioration of the latex or polyfoam, splitting or cracking of the material, body indentations (1 inch or greater), and/or sagging despite support from a solid foundation. The warranty does not cover the normal slight increase in softness or decrease in recovery of the latex during the “breaking-in” process, normal wear and tear of the mattress fabric, or mattress damage due to an inappropriate foundation.

Plank Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Plank mattresses keep motion transference to a minimum. While some test sleepers reported being able to feel their partners’ movements very slightly, the Plank, being a densely packed, foam-based mattress, generally performs very well when it comes to keeping the surface still. This makes the Plank a good choice for couples with one (or two) frequent position-switchers.

Edge Support

The Plank consistently performs highly in this category. Users report little to no give or sagging as you move toward the edge of the bed. This makes the Plank ideal for folks who tend to migrate toward the edge of the bed during the night, and especially for couples sharing a smaller sized mattress.

Heat Retention

The Plank comes with an optional cooling panel, which uses phase change materials to divert excessive heat.

The cooling panels are a good investment for people who tend to sleep hot. Even without the panels, there are several things that help the Plank sleep cooler than similar models in the field. For one, the two-inch TitanFlex support layer has its own cooling gel, which helps circulate airflow and regulate mattress temperature. The covers on both sides of the mattress incorporate breathable poly-cotton, which helps neutralize body heat.

Plank mattresses don’t have much of an off-gassing problem.Though there may be a slight smell when the mattress is freshly unboxed, it tends to dissipate quickly.

When it comes to support, the Plank is better for people who do not sleep on their side. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, the Plank will provide the hip, torso, and spinal support you need to maintain alignment and keep pressure off your joints. However, because of how firm the mattress is, if you tend to spend more than 20% of the night on your side, the Plank might not be body-conforming enough to properly support you. This is especially true if you are a lighter person, since smaller side-sleepers tend to need more contouring support.

As mentioned above, the Plank is designed to be nonconforming, focusing instead on firmness-based support. The “firm” side of the mattress offers slightly more body-conforming than the “ultra-firm” side, but generally, if you’re looking for a mattress that conforms to your body, the Plank is probably not for you.

All the elements of this mattress, especially the 7-inch high-density foam core, make for a highly durable product. Being a foam mattress, it has a longer-than-average lifespan and resists sagging longer than non-foam mattresses. Since it is flippable, the Plank is even more durable than similar foam mattresses that only utilize one side.

The Plank is very firm, with very little give, which makes it a great mattress for sex. Excellent edge support and minimal sinkage mean the Plank is strong enough to support the weight of multiple bodies. The Plank also has great air circulation and heat transfer, which will keep it from getting sweaty and help with the cool down.

If noisy mattresses bother you, the Plank is a great option. Since it is foam-based, it’s basically silent when bearing weight.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to a Plank Mattress?

Back Sleepers: The Plank is great for back sleepers. Back sleepers often prefer a firmer mattress, and if you’re looking for firm, the Plank has you covered. The mattress offers excellent lumbar support which back sleepers need. It is also designed to maximize spinal alignment, which will help back sleepers find their most comfortable sleeping spot.

Stomach Sleepers: The Plank is also a great choice for stomach sleepers. Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm mattresses. The Plank is particularly suited to stomach sleepers because the even surface support helps to keep the hips level with the rest of the body, which can cut down on back, hip, and joint pain.

Side Sleepers: The Plank isn’t a great choice for all side sleepers. Because their weight is concentrated on a more narrow part of the body, they tend to want more contouring to support their shoulders and hips. This is especially true for smaller people. The Plank wasn’t designed to contour to the body very much, so it might not provide the specific sort of support side sleepers need. However, the firmness of the mattress is beneficial and tends to be more comfortable to heavier individuals, regardless of sleep position.

Our Verdict

The Plank mattress is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a firm mattress. The dual-sided construction makes it customizable to individual tastes, and the high-quality materials make it durable and long-lasting. It’s a good choice for hot sleepers (especially if you opt for the additional cooling pads), and is also a good pick for couples, since it offers surface support with little to no motion transfer. It might not be the best option for side sleepers (especially those on the lighter side), but it’s ideal for stomach and back sleepers. Ordering and delivery is pain-free, and no additional construction is required once the mattress arrives. It’s not the cheapest mattress, but compared to mattresses of a similar quality, the price is very reasonable.
