Tempur-Pedic has been a leader in the mattress industry since launching in 1992, and is well-known for high-quality, innovative memory foam mattresses. At just about two years old, Puffy may not have the same household name recognition as Tempur-Pedic, but it’s quickly building a reputation for its comfortable mattresses and excellent customer service.

On the surface, it may seem like comparing these two mattress brands is an apples and oranges situation. After all, Tempur-Pedic is one of the best-known mattress manufacturers in the world, particularly since merging with Sealy in 2012. They sell dozens of different mattress models online, in their own brick-and-mortar locations, and through third parties, and with a price tag much higher than most competitors. In comparison, Puffy only sells mattresses online, at a much lower price point, and offers two models: The Puffy Mattress, and the Puffy Lux.

However, as Puffy grows in popularity, you may be wondering how the mattress stacks up against the Tempur-Pedic. We’ve developed this head-to-head comparison of each manufacturer’s basic model (The Puffy Mattress vs. TempurPedic’s Tempur-Adapt) to help you compare the two models on the most important criteria to consider when buying a new mattress, and make the right decision for you.

Puffy Mattress vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattress – Which One Should You Buy?

While comparing the Puffy mattress and the Tempur-Pedic mattress on construction, firmness, sleep experience, pricing, value, and more may be helpful, it can also be overwhelming. With so many factors to consider, deciding which mattress is best for you can be difficult. We’ve created a list of key differentiators to give you a quick overview.

Buy the Puffy if...

1. Are on a budget

Although slightly higher in price than other memory foam mattresses, a Puffy Mattress costs about 50% less than a Tempur-Pedic. The company does not offer White Glove delivery or haul-away services. However, it does offer a more generous sleep trial period and a lifetime warranty.

2. Sleep Hot

Puffy mattresses sleep cooler than Tempur-Pedic, thanks to the cooling memory foam layers. You are less likely to overheat on a Puffy mattress.

3. You Know You Want a Medium Firm Mattress

The Puffy Mattress is only available in one firmness option, medium firm. If you know that you like this firmness, the mattress will work for you, but if you are unsure, you may need to explore other options.

Buy the Tempur-Pedic if...

1. Want a well-known name brand

Tempur-Pedic was a pioneer in the development of memory foam mattresses, and has an excellent track record of manufacturing high-quality mattresses that last. The company holds the NASA Certified Space Technology Seal and the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

2. You want multiple firmness options

Although the Tempur-Pedic Adapt series is only available in medium firmness, the company’s other mattress series have multiple firmness options that may be better suited to your needs.

3. Motion isolation and contouring are your priorities

Motion transfer is practically non-existent on a Tempur-Pedic mattress, and the memory foam layers offer exceptional contouring and support.

4. You want excellent service

Tempur-Pedic mattresses have a higher price point, but that includes the option for White Glove delivery and haul away of your old mattress. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are also sold more widely in brick-and-mortar stores, so you can try different models before making a purchase decision.

Selecting the right mattress ultimately comes down to your personal preferences. While both the Tempur-Pedic and the Puffy are great choices, looking closely at their differences and similarities can help you narrow down your selection. If you are looking to invest in a mattress that provides exceptional contouring and motion isolation, it’s hard to beat Tempur-Pedic’s reputation for quality. However, that quality comes at a high price, and you might find the memory foam provides a bit too much contouring or sleeps hot.

The Puffy mattress has a lower price, but the young company is already establishing a reputation for excellent quality and service. If you want a memory foam mattress that offers good contouring, excellent motion isolation, better temperature regulation, and a lifetime warranty, then it may be the right choice for you.

Mattress Construction Comparison

Puffy

The Puffy Mattress is an all-foam mattress, constructed in the USA from three layers of foam. The top layer is 2 inches of gel-infused Cooling Cloud memory foam, designed to help regulate temperature. The middle layer is 2 inches of ClimateComfort memory foam, a polyurethane foam developed to help relieve pressure and regulate the temperature of the mattress. These two layers are on top of the 6-inchForm Core Support Base, made from high-density polyfoam. All of the foam used in Puffy mattresses is CertiPUR-US® Certified.

The top two layers of foam on the Puffy are designed to contour to your body and relieve pressure points in the shoulders and hips for side sleepers, while still providing support and alignment for back sleepers. The ClimateComfort layer was also developed to resist contracting or expanding when the temperature changes and maintains a consistent temperature -- not too hot or too cold -- all year.

Tempur-Pedic

The Tempur-Adapt series is the original style of Tempur-Pedic mattress, one of the first memory foam mattresses on the market. Although the company does not publish specifics about the materials used or the thickness of the layers, the company is well-known for using high-quality viscoelastic memory foam.

The all-foam version of the Tempur-Pedic-Adapt mattress is about 11 inches thick and has four layers that work together to create a custom feel. The top layer is a knit fabric layer that stays cool to the touch. Underneath, two foam layers provide contouring and comfort: The Tempur-ES comfort layer, and the Original Tempur support layer. All of these layers are on top of a high-quality foam base for support.

Firmness Comparison

Firmness refers to how comfortable a mattress feels and is typically the most important criteria when shopping for a new mattress. Firmness is not the same as support, which refers to how well the mattress keeps your body aligned, but is a subjective evaluation of how comfortable you feel. Because comfort is influenced by your own preferences, weight, and sleeping position, a mattress that feels like sleeping on a cloud to you might feel like sleeping on a park bench to someone else. Further complicating matters is the fact that manufacturers use different terminology to describe their mattresses’  firmness. One company’s “extra firm” might feel similar to another’s “medium-firm,” which can be confusing.

To help clarify firmness descriptions, we use the firmness scale. Although there may be some slight variations in how manufacturers classify specific mattress models, most fall somewhere along the following scale:

  • 1 (Maximum Softness): These mattresses are rare, and are super plush -- you will sink right in.
  • 2-3 (Soft): Very soft; you will notice sinking into the mattress.
  • 4-6 (medium): The most popular type of mattress, offering a firmer surface with limited sink.
  • 7-9 (firm): A harder mattress that has almost no sink.
  • 10 (extremely firm): Another rare mattress, an extremely firm mattress is not soft at all, and does not allow any sink.

The Puffy Mattress is rated by the manufacturer as a 6-8, or medium-firm on the firmness scale, although some reviewers rate it as being on the softer end of that spectrum. Puffy’s foam layers are designed to contour to your body regardless of sleep position, which enhances comfort. Tempur-Pedic describes its Adapt line of mattresses as a medium firmness, putting it at a 4-6 on the scale. The mattress uses three layers of foam to adapt to your body and preferred sleeping position.

Sleep Experience

The firmness of a mattress is only one element that determines the overall sleep experience. Everything from how hot or cool the mattress sleeps to how bouncy it is can influence how comfortable you are and how well you sleep. In the following section, we’ll highlight some of the most important factors that go into how well a mattress might work for you, and show you how the Puffy Mattress and Tempur-Pedic compare in these areas.

Temperature Control

Temperature control refers to whether a mattress sleeps hot or stays cool. Often, memory foam mattresses are not ideal for those who tend to sleep hot, as the foam retains heat. The Puffy Mattress does include a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam designed to control the temperature while you sleep and preventing overheating. Although Tempur-Pedic has made some changes to their materials to help improve the temperature regulation of their mattresses, they are still known for sleeping hot as compared to other brands. The foam used in the Tempur-Pedic does retain more heat, and because it’s designed to contour the body closely, it doesn’t allow as much airflow. Therefore, if you tend to sleep hot, the Puffy may be a better choice.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer can be very disruptive to sleep, and you want a mattress that limits how much movement you feel when you or your sleeping partner changes position. Memory foam is typically very good at limiting motion transfer, and the Puffy Mattress is no exception as testers reported limited motion transfer. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are some of the best rated in terms of limiting motion transfer, with many users reporting that they don’t feel any motion at all when their partner moves. This is because the Tempur-Pedic foam will only compress when weight is put on it, and it returns to its original shape once the weight is removed. If you are concerned about motion transfer, the Puffy does provide above-average isolation, but the Tempur-Pedic is the gold standard in this area.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to a mattress’ ability to properly align the spine by providing the right amount of cushioning to each part of the body, depending on where weight is put on the mattress. The more responsive a mattress, the more it cushions the pressure points and contours to the body.

Both the Puffy and the Tempur-Pedic are responsive mattresses, providing excellent contouring and alignment of the spine to reduce pain and discomfort. The memory foam used in the mattresses offers plenty of supportive contouring, but some sleepers note that the Tempur-Pedic memory foam contours just a bit too much. This makes it the more responsive of the two mattresses, but the excess contouring isn’t comfortable for everyone and can make the mattress feel hotter.

Resilience and Bounce

A mattress’s resilience is its ability to return to its original shape after pressure is applied. Memory foam tends to “bounce back” more slowly than other materials, which is why it sometimes creates a sinking feeling or makes it difficult to move around in bed. It’s also not always ideal for sex.

Generally speaking, if you are looking for a mattress with plenty of bounce and resilience, you want something a bit more firm than a memory foam mattress. That being said, overall the Puffy mattress is somewhat more resilient than the Tempur-Pedic, but neither offers very much bounce. Neither mattress is ideal for sex, as the contouring and sink coupled with the fact that it takes a few moments to return to its original shape make it difficult to move around in bed.

Edge Support

Edge support is often a weak area with memory foam mattresses. Because they are constructed differently than traditional innerspring mattresses, memory foam mattresses do not have the extra stability on the edges, which can make it more difficult to get in and out of bed and lead to sagging along the edges over time. Although edge support doesn’t typically present an issue when sleeping, even if you sleep close to the edge of the bed, it is an issue if you sit on the edge of the bed. The Puffy Mattress’ higher level of responsiveness does mean that returns to its original shape somewhat more quickly than the Tempur-Pedic if you sit on the edge of the bed, but the mattresses are about equal in terms of edge support. Also, in both cases, the issue of edge compression is more pronounced for people who weigh more.

Off-gassing and Smell

Off-gassing, or an odor, is common with memory foam mattresses, and Tempur-Pedic and Puffy Mattresses are no exception. Most people report that the smell dissipates within a few hours, and lasts a few days at most.
