ReST burst onto the scene in 2015 with the first smart bed of its kind, based on technology that was originally used for medical purposes. The ReST Bed mattress adjusts firmness in real-time throughout five zones according to pressure data from its smart sensors. The technology was recognized at the 2015 CES Innovation Awards.
The ReST mattress is targeted towards athletes and people with aches and pains who need a fully customizable bed. ReST also sells a foundation to accompany the bed. They don’t currently have any other sleep products.
Each side of the bed can either be controlled automatically or manually, using the app. ReST has tentative plans to use the technology for pillows and mattress toppers, in order to expand their offering at a lower price point. The company aims to fully integrate the bed with other Internet of Things devices such as the lights and alarm clocks to make a smart home with the bed as nexus.
In this ReST Bed mattress review, we’ll cover all the features of the ReST mattress including construction, sleep experience, and warranty.
In-depth ReST Bed Mattress Review
Mattress Sizing and Pricing
The split top mattress allows you to raise and lower the separate head areas and is meant to be paired with an adjustable base. The foot area can still be raised and lowered but both sides are attached. In contrast, the split king is made of two XL mattresses. This setup allows individual control over the foot section as well for each side.
Twin XL mattresses come with one set of hoses and all other beds come with two. A tablet per side is included with each bed.
The ReST mattress does not come in full size.

Firmness is a term used to describe whether we find a mattress soft or hard, and it’s key to how comfortable a mattress will be. A mattress that’s too firm won’t provide pressure relief, while a mattress that’s too soft won’t provide enough support. Most people favor a medium-firm mattress, but your personal preference will depend on your weight, sleeping style, and other factors.
ReST claims their mattress has “limitless firmness configurations.” While this may be a bit of an overstatement, it’s true that the mattress has a wide range of options. The range of firmness levels varies from about a 4 to an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. The Automatic Adjust mode falls around a 6.5 out of 10, or medium-firm.
The ReST mattress is currently available for purchase on the ReST website and in select Mattress Direct, HOM Furniture, and other brick-and-mortar stores across the US. ReST has a showroom in Atlanta, Georgia and is planning to open its first retail location in Atlanta this fall. Shipping costs $199 and includes White Glove delivery.
The ReST mattress is approximately 13 inches tall. The zippered cover is machine-washable, made of a flexible and breathable fabric similar to athletic wear that wicks away moisture for a cooler night.
The smart sensor is made with an antimicrobial and flexible knit blend fabric that won’t disturb your sleep. Each side of the bed has around 1,000 data points that continuously measure your pressure data and send the information to the air pump and the app. No wires or cables are required.
The comfort layer is made of 3 inches of gel-infused memory foam. The memory foam contours to your body to reduce pressure points and the gel-infusion molecules help you sleep cool. This is followed by a 1-inch transition layer of high-resilience foam that helps provide support to your body and the structure of the mattress.
The polyurethane air chambers are medical-grade and are divided into 5 independent zones: head, shoulders, lumbar area, hips, and legs. The air chambers are tightly welded shut to protect against air leaks.
The smart pump has a processing chip with algorithms that adapt to provide pressure relief and support according to your user data. Connected via a closed wifi network, the ReST app allows you to switch between the three operating modes and shows you your pressure map in real-time. The app is available for Android and iOS and upgrades automatically whenever there are new features.
You have three choices for adjusting the firmness profile. In manual mode, you can adjust the body zones yourself according to your preference. In auto-position mode, you can lock in different memory settings for sleeping on your back vs. your side and the bed will adjust accordingly throughout the night. In automatic mode, you choose a general firmness preference and the bed makes all the necessary adjustments throughout the night according to your pressure map.
The ReST mattress features interlocking edge support and a firm support foam in the base layer. The mattress is compatible with virtually any foundation, such as box spring, platform, or adjustable base.
The entire mattress is modular, meaning that if any one component fails, that component can be replaced without needing to replace the whole mattress.
It’s recommended to use a surge protector to protect the electronic components. Sleeping with pets is no problem – in fact, the bed will adjust to them as well if you like!
The ReST mattress ships to the US, Canada, and overseas Armed Forces bases. The mattress ships from California and usually delivers within 6-10 days. For information about shipping outside the US, contact ReST directly. The ReST mattress and White Glove delivery is available to Canadian customers through the ReST website. There is an additional $199 delivery fee on top of the regular shipping fee, for a total of $398.
White Glove delivery is automatically added to every order for a fee of $199. ReST will contact you to schedule a time that works for you. On delivery day, a two-person team will unbox the mattress and set it up in the bedroom. This should take about 20 minutes. They will set up the pumps and cords and inflate the mattress; all that’s left for you to do is find your preferred firmness settings. ReST does not state whether they offer old mattress removal.
The ReST mattress comes with a 90-day sleep trial when purchased online. You may return the mattress at any point during this period for a refund. The sleep trial policy may differ for ReST mattresses purchased from brick-and-mortar stores. Check with your individual retailer before buying.
The ReST mattress is covered by a 10-year non-prorated warranty that guarantees the bed to be free from workmanship and material defects and in good working order, provided it is subjected to normal use. Since the mattress design is modular, ReST will endeavor to replace only the parts needed where possible. For the entire warranty period, ReST will foot 100% of the cost of the replacement part(s) plus shipping costs. Replacement parts should arrive within 1-7 business days. To remain under warranty, mattresses must be used with a proper foundation. Body impressions less than 1.5 inches are not covered. The warranty extends only to the original buyer and will be void if the mattress has been burned or damaged. Tablets provided by ReST are covered by their own separate 1-year warranty.
ReST Bed Performance
The 5 air chambers in the ReST mattress adapt to the different needs of your body, alternately relieving pressure points and firming up to provide support where needed. You can rely on the smart sensors, or shape your own body profile according to your needs – for example, if you have an injury. Along with the memory foam in the comfort layer, which provides excellent contouring, this helps keep your spine aligned and reduce soreness when you wake up in the morning.
In addition to providing support, a mattress should adapt to the shape of your body to provide better pressure relief. There are 3 inches of memory foam in the comfort layer of the ReST mattress which will conform well to the curves of your body.
ReST doesn’t publish the density of their foams but given the price point, it’s to be expected that they use quality materials that will last a long time.
Because of its modular design, there’s no need to replace the whole ReST mattress for one faulty part. During the warranty period, the company will send you replacement parts for any malfunctioning elements that are covered by the warranty.
Suitability for Sex
Memory foam is excellent at contouring to your body but slow to regain its shape. With 3 inches of memory foam in the comfort layer, the ReST Bed mattress is not the most resilient mattress out there. This can negatively affect sex, changing sleeping positions, and getting in and out of bed. The high-resilience polyfoam underneath the memory foam will add some bounce. For slightly more resilience, try increasing the firmness setting.
It’s important that a bed has good motion isolation if you’re sharing with a sleeping partner, so your movements don’t affect each other. The ReST Bed mattress has five separate air chambers for each person, as well as 3 inches of memory foam in the comfort layer. Both these features help isolate motion so your sleeping partner won’t feel it when you move around. The sensors may cause some slight motion transfer but overall the ReST mattress ranks well on motion isolation.
The ReST mattress uses interlocking edge support to reinforce the edges. Along with the HD polyfoam in the base layer (and underneath the memory foam), this ensures that the mattress won’t compress too much under the pressure when you sit or lie on the edge of the bed. The superior edge support makes this a popular mattress with couples.
Memory foam is known for retaining heat and restricting airflow, leading to a hot sleeping experience. However, ReST combats this by infusing the memory foam with gel. The cover also wicks away moisture so you won’t wake up bathed in your own sweat.
Many foams emit an off-gassing smell when they are first unpacked. Since the ReST Mattress contains memory foam and polyfoam, you might notice some odors at first. These should go away within a few days.
Most airbeds make a bit of noise when inflating and deflating so this is certainly something to consider if you’re a light sleeper. However, as far as airbeds go, the ReST mattress is fairly quiet.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a ReST Bed?
Side Sleepers: The separate air chambers and thick memory foam comfort layer should provide excellent pressure relief under the hips and shoulders for most side sleepers. Especially on automatic mode, the ReST mattress can adjust the firmness perfectly to the contours of the body to maintain proper spinal alignment.
Back Sleepers: Between the memory foam and the customizable firmness, back sleepers will find the ReST mattress does a good job of supporting the lumbar area while reducing pressure points under the hips and shoulders. Heavier side and back sleepers will appreciate that even when they sink through the memory foam comfort layer, the air chambers underneath can still be deflated to reduce pressure points.
Stomach Sleepers: Because of the thick memory foam comfort layer, lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers may find the bed a little plush, even on the higher firmness settings. This can lead to the hips sinking in too far and throwing the spine out of alignment. If this happens, firming up the middle air chamber may help.

You don’t have to worry about understanding which firmness level works best for you or adjusting your bed as you change sleeping positions because the mattress will take care of it.
The mattress is mainly targeted towards athletes and chronic pain sufferers, but it’s safe to say most people could benefit from a mattress that provides personalized support and pressure relief. However, the high ReST Bed mattress price point may be a drawback for some shoppers.
