Since it debuted in 2012, the Tuft and Needle mattress has been gently tweaked and adjusted. Customers originally complained that the bed was too firm. Since then, the company has reengineered the mattress, which now falls around a 6.5 on the firmness scale. (This scale is from 1-10, with 1 being the least firm and 10 being the most firm.) This is considered medium-firm and is a safe starting point for most sleepers. If you know that you prefer a more plush mattress feel, this bed might not be right for you.

The Tuft & Needle mattress is available online directly from the manufacturer’s website and Amazon. Tuft & Needle operates three brick and mortar stores in Arizona and Washington.

The Tuft & Needle foam mattress is constructed in two simple layers. The support core is 7 inches of support foam with a density of 1.8 PCF (pounds per cubic foot). The top layer is 3 inches of a proprietary Adaptive foam with a density of 2.8 PCF. Tuft & Needle created this foam to conform and provide pressure relief without “feeling like quicksand.” The mattress cover is a blend of rayon and polyester. The bed is CERTI-Pur and GreenGUARD certified.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Customers report that Tuft & Needle’s Adaptive foam traps and isolates motion much like other common memory and poly foams. Because motion is trapped, it does not travel across the mattress and disturb a sleeping partner.

Edge Support

Weak edge support is a common complaint of foam mattresses and the Tuft & Needle bed is not immune. Because foam mattresses do not have a reinforced perimeter, it is common to experience sinkage around the edge of the bed.

Heat Retention

The Adaptive foam in the Tuft & Needle’s top layer contains heat-wicking graphite and a cooling gel, helping to keep the mattress more breathable. Some customers still say the bed sleeps excessively hot – another common complaint of foam beds – but it’s not a frequent concern.

Off-gassing is the temporary smell that happens when a compressed mattress is first unsealed from its packaging. This odor is common with all “bed in a box” brands and typically dissipates within just a few hours. Some off-gassing is to be expected with the Tuft & Needle bed, but it should be nothing excessive.

The 7-inch support core on the Tuft & Needle provides a solid base level of support and the top layer of Adaptive foam is made to relieve pressure. These two layers work together to provide customized support – the more pressure that is applied, the more the mattress reacts to give proper support. Sleepers of all sizes and weights, therefore, find the Tuft & Needle mattress to be supportive.

Tuft & Needle created its proprietary Adaptive foam to conform and contour to a sleeper’s body while eliminating excessive “sinkage.” Customers report above-average pressure point and pain relief.

Tuft & Needle has one of the longest track records in the online mattress industry. The company has developed a solid reputation with its products. That being said, Tuft & Needle still hasn’t been around long enough to know exactly how the beds will perform long-term.

Because the Tuft & Needle was crafted specifically to avoid “sinkage,” it doesn’t prohibit movement to the extent that some memory and mixed foam beds do. It doesn’t provide as much bounce as an innerspring or hybrid mattress, but most couples won’t find that the Tuft & Needle restricts sexual activity.

What type of sleeper is well suited to a Tuft & Needle Mattress

With every mattress review, we remind you that choosing the right bed is a personal decision. Always consider your own personal preferences, sleeping position, body weight and type, and any health conditions you may have. Take into account your own individual comfort and spinal support needs. Use any sleep trial to make sure that whatever bed you choose is the right fit for you.

With that in mind, consider this subjective customer feedback on the Tuft & Needle mattress:

The Tuft & Needle received positive marks across the board, from sleepers with varying body types and sleeping positions. Above average weight sleepers (those weighing more than 230 lbs) who sleep on their stomachs and below average weight sleepers (those weighing less than 130 lbs) who sleep on their sides gave the bed its lowest mark of “fair.” These sleepers might have found the bed a bit too firm. Other than that, sleepers report being satisfied with the comfort of the Tuft & Needle bed.

Below Average Weight (under 130 lbs) Average Weight (130-230 lbs) Above Average Weight (above 230 lbs)
Side Sleepers Fair Very good Good
Back Sleepers Very good Good Good
Stomach Sleepers Good Good Fair
