Zinus Mattress Review

With over 15 years in the bedding industry, Zinus has carved out a niche as a provider of affordable products. The company’s Green Tea Memory Foam mattress offers customers a simple and solid foam bed at a highly competitive price point.

To set its memory foam apart, Zinus created BioFoam, which infuses the material with castor seed oil, green tea, and charcoal. All of these are included to reduce moisture-retention and odor in the mattress.

The Green Tea mattress comes in multiple models that give customers a choice of different heights, firmness levels, and price. Each comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

For customers on a limited budget but seeking the contouring effect of memory foam, the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief mattress warrants serious consideration.

Construction

The comfort layer of each Green Tea mattress is memory foam. Specifically, these mattresses use the company’s BioFoam. This material has green tea extract, castor seed oil, and charcoal within the foam to reduce moisture and fight odor.

A Jacquard knit cover provides softness and a slight texture to the exterior of the mattress.

The interior construction of each of the Green Tea mattress models is listed in the table below.

Shipping

Zinus offers free shipping by FedEx Ground to addresses within the contiguous United States. Orders ship within 2-3 days after an order is placed.

Each mattress is shipped as a bed-in-a-box, and once removed from the packaging, the mattress will decompress to reach its full size. Usually this happens within 2-3 days, but in some cases, it may take up to a week for the mattress to take its full height and shape.

Additional Services

Zinus does not offer installation, haul-away of an old mattress, or any other type of white glove service.

Sleep Trial

The Zinus Green Tea mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial. There is no required break-in period: you can initiate a return at any point within the 100-night trial.

If you decide to return the mattress, the company will provide a return shipping label so that FedEx will pick it up and return it to the company.

Warranty

All of the Green Tea memory foam mattresses come with a 10-year warranty. If there is a defect in the mattress, the company will either replace your mattress or give you a pro-rated refund. If only a specific part is defective, the company may choose to repair or replace that part only.

Zinus Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

In general, memory foam offers excellent motion isolation, so motion transfer is rarely an issue on the Zinus Green Tea mattresses. For customers who are more motion sensitive, the taller models that have thicker memory foam layers will provide a higher degree of motion isolation.

Edge Support

The Zinus Green Tea mattress does not have any design elements to reinforce the foam around the perimeter of the bed. As a result, the foams tend to compress more heavily and offer less support around the edge.

The 6” and 8” models that are firmer and have a greater percentage of high-density support foam will suffer from less compression at the edge than the models with thicker comfort layers.

Heat Retention

Heat retention can be a problem on the Green Tea mattresses. As the memory foam conforms to your body, airflow becomes limited and can’t cool your skin down. At the same time, the foam itself begins to heat up, making it softer and more conforming.

The extent of heat retention will be greater in the softer models of the Green Tea mattress. People who tend to sleep hot should be wary of opting for a memory foam mattress like this that does not include specific design elements to combat heat buildup.

Off-Gassing

Customers report significant odor from the foams when the Green Tea mattress is first unboxed and setup. In most cases, this smell goes away within a few days or up to a week, which is roughly the same timeframe that it takes for the mattress to completely decompress and air out.

The inclusion of green tea, castor oil, and charcoal in the memory foam is designed to help fight odor and moisture; however, there is no evidence that these are able to prevent the initial smell that comes when the mattress is first unpackaged.

Support

The Green Tea mattresses provide good support though the pressure-relieving characteristics of memory foam. Because it can respond to the distribution of weight in the body, memory foam works to give extra cushioning to the parts of the body that most require it.

This type of tailored cushioning can play an important role in promoting spinal alignment. The taller versions of the Green Tea mattress that have thicker memory foam layers will be able to more reliably provide this kind of support.

Conforming

Memory foam is known for its ability to conform, so this will be noticeable for most customers on most of the Green Tea mattresses. However, the 6” and 8” models, which are firmer and have thinner memory foam layers, will provide the least amount of conforming.

The taller models, especially the 12”, have a softer feel and may have too much conforming for some sleepers, most notably people who weigh over 230 pounds.

Durability

The expected lifespan of a Zinus Green Tea mattress is around 6 years, but this can vary based on how much wear-and-tear a person or a couple puts on the bed. This longevity can depend as well on the thickness of the memory foam layer. The thinner models are more likely to see the foam wear out in a shorter period of time.

Sex

Memory foam is not the ideal material for facilitating sex because of how it conforms to the weight of the body. As the foam compresses, it can make it harder to reposition on top of the bed. This effect will be more pronounced in the taller, softer mattress models.

How Do Customers Rate the Tempur-Pedic Mattresses?

Customer ratings for the Green Tea mattresses are available on the Zinus website, Amazon, and Google Shopping. However, it is important to note that these sites do not separate the reviews based on the height of the mattress. As a result, reviews are only available for the Green Tea mattresses as a whole.

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to a Zinus Mattress?

Every sleeper has unique needs and preferences, and as a result, the mattress that is a best match for any person is necessarily subjective. That said, we do know that both body weight and primary sleeping position can serve as useful guideposts for finding the right bed.

Side Sleepers

If you spend most of your time sleeping on your side, your most extreme pressure points are likely at the shoulder and hips, and these parts of the body need extra cushioning. A mattress that is too firm won’t provide this cushioning, but a mattress that is too soft will permit these parts of the body to sink too far and out of alignment with the rest of the body.

Side sleepers of a higher body weight will be more prone to excessive hug while those under 130 pounds can usually get adequate support on a less firm bed. Side sleepers over 230 pounds generally get the best performance and durability if the comfort layer is 3” or thicker.

The 10” and 12” models offer more softness and cushioning to accommodate most side sleepers. Because most of the Green Tea mattresses have thin top layers, they are generally not the best choice for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

Green Tea Mattress Performance for Side Sleepers

Mattress Under 130 Pounds 130-230 Pounds Above 230 Pounds
6” Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Fair Poor Poor
8” Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Good Fair Poor
10" Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Good Good Fair
12” Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Very good Good Fair
Back Sleepers

For back sleepers, too much contouring or plushness can create problems with spinal alignment. Because the abdomen tends to have more concentrated weight, it is susceptible to sinking deeper into the bed than the rest of the body.

On the flip side, without any contouring, this heavier part of the body will get inadequate support. In either case, the body can be thrown out of line.

Given these needs, a firmer mattress that can still provide moderate contouring typically best suits back sleepers. Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds don’t sink into a mattress as much and can maintain alignment on a softer bed.

None of the Green Tea mattresses are a great fit for back sleepers over 230 pounds because they are either too soft or have comfort layers that are too thin.

The 8” and 10” models are solid choices for back sleepers under 230 pounds.

8” Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Very good Good Fair
10" Green Tea Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Very good Good Poor

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping is the least common sleeping position, and it comes with some unique needs. Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers require a surface that is not too soft and that does not let the midsection sink too far into the mattress. For this reason, firmer beds are far-and-away the best choice for most stomach sleepers.

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds won’t sink as much into memory foam, and for this reason, they can normally get good results from slightly softer beds than people who weigh more than 130 pounds.

All these factors considered, none of the Green Tea mattresses are a good match for higher-weight stomach sleepers, and the best choice for stomach sleepers under 230 pounds is the 8” model.

Our Verdict

The Zinus Green Tea mattress has notable shortcomings. For sleepers over 230 pounds, virtually none of the models provide adequate support and durability. Several of the models lack the thickness of memory foam that offers the best performance and longevity in this type of mattress.

Despite these shortcomings, the Green Tea mattress has a compelling value proposition for budget-conscious shoppers. Its price is well below most other memory foam beds on the market, and it still comes with a sleep trial of 100 nights to test it out risk-free.

With a range of firmness levels and height profiles to choose from, customers who don’t need nor want a lot of bells and whistles in their mattress may find this product to be exactly their cup of Green Tea.
